What happens when I delete site data in Brave?

I’ve deleted the Brave cache many times with no issue, but today I’ve discovered my most frequented site has over 300m of data in it! Is this a site-specific cache situation or a storage situation? Will I be fine if I clear it?

I believe so. I guess it’s only the cookies, cache. @Aman_M @rodrige might be able to explain better.

@BoomTube Welcome to the community.

Result of search of “What is browser cache” from the Summarizer (love this feature!):

This Brave Help Center article will help with options:

Clear away! You may notice a slight delay as sites download to cache again, but other than that you shouldn’t have any other issues. I clear cache frequently (on exit).

Hope this helps! Take care. :slightly_smiling_face:

If this site data is just cached files why does it seem to be separate from the app itself’s cache and not deleted as well when I clear it?

@BoomTube The browser data cache stores cache for all sites you visit. I think if you read the Help Center article it will help you understand options. Relinking for convenience:

You can clear individual site cache. Clearing an individual site’s cache is not the same as clearing all cache data.

I hope I have interpreted your question correctly. Please post again if I haven’t! I think reading the article will help you understand the variations available for clearing cache (and cookies). Take care. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m saying that I’ve cleared Brave’s app cache many times, but the site data remains. My most used sites total over 200m, much higher than the Brave app cache, which usually sits at around 60m on more active days. This (along with the fact this beefy amount of site data remains after clearing the Brave app cache) leads me to believe it might not be cached data stored in that site data, but something else.

@BoomTube Ah, ok, I did misunderstand. I do not know what cache you are talking about. Please provide more details. If the cache you are referencing is Brave native, please provide path. If you are talking about cookie data at brave://settings/content/all, then no problem to clear that.

If you are viewing app cache somewhere else or in an app external to Brave native, please provide details. I am fairly certain you can clear any Brave cache or temporary storage files with no adverse effects. I do not know about anything external to Brave native. If it is a tool/extension/app display external to Brave, I think your best bet would be to look through its documentation.

Again, please provide more information. Thanks.

This is what I’m referring to. Notice how there’s two instances of certain websites for some reason?

Ah, didn’t realize this was a mobile device. I should have asked! I do not use Brave on mobile. I do use a browser on my mobile (iOS) and I clear browsing data (private and website) after every use. Never have a problem.

This looks like an Android device and I do not know what clearing storage will do on an Android device. I would venture to guess clearing User data and Cache would not be a problem. I did a quick web search and appears that clearing cache is no problem (example article: https://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-clear-cache-on-the-samsung-galaxy-s10-970138/).

Below snip is what the Summarizer says about clearing storage on an Android phone.

Hopefully, a community member who knows something about Android phones will pop in and help. Or you could just do a web search and see if you can find information for your particular device.

In the meantime, I notice your Brave version is way out-of-date. Please update to the latest release. Also, make sure your device is updated to the latest version too! Updating to the latest releases may solve any glitches you are experiencing. After updating, please post your Brave and device information (device/OS version). It will help in answering your questions.

Sorry for the confusion. Take care.
