- I have an older pc (Lenovo A6-3600) with 8 GB ram and Windows 7 Home: Brave (current version) crashed and will not recover (starts but closes after a few seconds). I’m migrating to Linux Mint/Cinnamon but need to recover all the open Tabs, Bookmarks, Password etc.
Have searched here and found out the last version for W7 was 1.47.168 and tried to download it from Github but no exe file. Searched again and got that file (I think). But it behaves the same way. Closes after a few seconds. I have backed up the entire “Brave-Browser” (User) folder, which was about 3 GB! - I can reproduce it in many ways, because W7, as you know, is “no longer supported”. Just start up any version from W7 and voila! Instant crash.
- It would be great if I could install the latest version on Linux and then grab my User data from the old profile, including the Tabs that were open (way too many - I’m a Tabaholic) at the time it crashed.
I can’t tell you what version of Brave it was, since it crashes before I can get to that screen. But I believe it was the latest version, since when trying to reinstall it, I got the message that there are no updates.
Before doing anything, your folder with all your stuff is located here C:\Users\(User)\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data
. Make sure to back this up.
See my mega-post here, which mentions different fixes (don’t click restore on sight, as it’ll crash right there. You should be able to still click that button after changing that shields setting):
If that helped fix your issue, please mark this as the solution to soft-close the thread.
If you still want to import your profile and you see no other choice, you MIGHT be able to. (I think for safety and privacy reasons, that may not work.)
I’ll let someone else more knowledgeable instruct you on exporting and importing your old data on a new install if it’s possible.
(I’m bad with collecting tabs too )
Fantastic! Thanks so much, Hotdogs555, for the tips.
As it turned out, I didn’t know what you meant by going to a site “offline”, so I searched this. Then I searched for a Brave version that was “offline”. I quickly found out that “offline” versions = “standalone” versions.
Found an earlier standalone version with the .exe file and installed it. It was:
BraveBrowserStandaloneSetup
Version 1.3.361.131
I launched it and immediately went for the Shields settings and disabled Trackers and Ad Blocking.
To my relief, the crashes stopped. I then started paring down my many tabs, seeing if there were any extensions that would allow Tab Groups. Boy, I found out how out-of-the-loop I’d become on my Browser knowledge. Not only were there bunches of such extensions, Brave has this built-in!
I know it’s off this topic, but I must add that this was the dealbreaker for me re Firefox, as all those add-ons broke when they reformulated their browser a couple years ago. SO VERY GLAD this is baked into Brave.
This is going on ALL my machines, no matter the OS!
Thanks again.
What I actually meant by offline was to disconnect from the internet and try to visit that tab(s)
But heck, as long as it all worked out for you, I’m glad.
