Video streaming from Discovery+ (e.g. Paris 2024 Olympics) causes massive memory leak. None on Firefox

Tested on both Windows 10 22H2 19045.4291 and MacOS 11.7.10 with Intel CPU (different physical machines), with the latest browser version for both OSs at the time of this writing (1.68.137), fresh install, no extensions, no cache, etc etc.

Playing any video stream from Discovery+ (e.g. Paris 2024 Olympics) causes a massive memory leak. It gradually fills up all memory of the machine, at a rate of about 1GB per 3-5 minutes. Eventually either the browser tab dies, the whole browser dies, or the whole machine dies (sadly, the former happens rarely). On a media box with 16GB RAM, I can only stream for about 60 minutes before it dies … which invariably also happens at some climatic point in a race (argh!)

The screenshot below is after about 20-25 minutes of watching.

The effect can be observed by opening the task manager and looking at the memory usage of the Discovery+ tab, and watching it increase from 150-200 MB to many, many GB, until it all croaks.

As a counterpoint, I also tested the same video URL in Firefox 129 … no memory leak whatsoever. The tab’s memory usage is more or less constant, and I can stream for hours.

Am I the only one?

edit: I just noticed this thread … an awkward and disappointing read. I also already tried the suggestions/ideas in there.
