I upgraded my Brave on MacOS 14.3.1 After I did this, I lost all my passwords. Further I could not sync from other devices I have. I removed the desktop from the sync chain and tried to enter it back in and I received “internal sync setup error”. I then managed to export a .csv file from another device to import my passwords manually. Nothing happened. No passwords were imported. I tried to manually enter a password by hand. It let me do it but did not save the password. My passwords are totally blank.
A file must have corrupted because all my other devices sync just fine, including my virtual machines that consist of iOS, windows, debian, fedora and a 14.x macos VM.
@jcaron could you try doing a manual update/patch by going to brave.com/download and install on top of your current version? (don’t uninstall, just put on top)
I’m curious about this part. The other day I created a new profile and attempted to sync. When I did, it immediately had bookmarks available but things like passwords didn’t show. After waiting a bit, I wrote to those at Brave to inquire, and showed how I had seen the error below at brave://sync-internals
I closed Brave and did some stuff, but when I came back it was all up and running. From what I’ve been seeing on some feedback from people, there’s a delay in passwords appearing.
Are you seeing something similar if you go to brave://sync-internals?
This makes it seem like it’s possibly another issue. Other thought to come to mind here is that your OS keyring got changed. But that wouldn’t fully answer some of the other things. Definitely is a bit confusing here. We may have to wait until Support gets back in after Monday to see if they can get some info from you and guide you along better.
@jcaron I do see where it’s saying no encryption keys. Brave does encryption using your OS keyring. Do you have a username and password on the device you’re using?
I got it working again. I wish I wrote everything down, but I will try to describe what I did to correct it (Some by accident) so you can keep it handy if somebody else has this problem.
I tried to log into my apple account. I responded with an “unknown error”. I tried to log in again and it said I was already logged in. I had access to my account but no control or admin access. I tried to access my keychain and asked for my password and after providing it, it gave me an error that I had no access to my own keychain.
I logged out of everything and used the “forgot my password” feature on apple.com. I changed my password. I then changed the password on my user account on the system and restarted my system. I logged back in using my new password and was able to log in. I logged into my apple account using the new password. I brought up keychain and was able to access the information there using the required passwords.
I brought up brave and was able to re-sync the browser to my account and passwords and other information came back.
To summarize: My apple account access was somehow corrupted. I had access but no control, or I was logged in, but not really (for lack of a better term) I completely logged out, used the forgotten password feature and logged back in. You have to do this on everything to everything to come back normal. it seems one is dependent on the other.
That’s it. I appreciate your help and I hope this summary can help somebody else if they encounter the same problem.
