Unauthorized transfer?

Issue :
I did not authorized the transfer of BAT to Brave Software International but I received a notification from uphold for this operation.

I have installed Brave on computer and phones.

Verified custodian : Uphold

What happened ?

Most likely you left Auto Contribute enabled. This is turned on by default when you enable Rewards and will automatically take 1 BAT to divide upon the website Creators you visited.

If you go to brave://rewards/ you’ll see the below:

If this is enabled on any profile on any of your devices that’s connected to Uphold, then it will deduct. If we aren’t wanting to do that, then we have to turn it off. But it’s enabled by default as it’s what the system is supposed to be.

Rewards system is:

  1. We block ads, which stops owners of the websites from earning money. But done to help preserve privacy and annoyances for us.

  2. We opt into Rewards to view privacy preserving ads in order to earn BAT.

  3. We then use that BAT to help support Creators, so they can afford to maintain their websites and continue to offer us content.

  4. If there’s anything remaining, we pocket it for ourselves.

  5. Creators and others buy ads on Rewards to bring our attention to their websites or services. Which then is how #2 is possible.

If a lot of people just keep skipping #3 then the ecosystem is going to struggle as we’ve been seeing.
