Tor private window does not connect

When I open a private tor window, it doesn’t connect.
Idk how to reproduce the issue on other pcs, but here’s what I have done to try to fix it:

uninstalling and reinstalling brave
deleting tor files
activating and deactivating tor private browsing
checking if it passsed through my firewall (tor and brave allowed)
looked at brave://components (everything updated)
and practically every solution this community offered

here’s the brave://tor-internals info: (in french sorry)
(
Version de Tor:

Identifiant de processus Tor: 14616

URI du proxy Tor:

État de la connexion Tor: Disconnected

Progression de l’initialisation de Tor:
)
and the logs are empty

**Brave Version: 1.73.97

neither the tor website or https://tor.bravesoftware.com/ is blocked on my browser
OS: windows 10 pro

Tor did work for a very long time but randomly stopped working around september this year, never to work again. Sadly, I don’t have the brave version this occured.

Please edit your Original Post (“OP”) above, to include:

  • Computer device Operating System

And provide info regarding:

  • Did the Brave Browser New Private Window with Tor ever work before, on the PC?

  • When did that work, and if you can recall, which version of Brave Browser?

It’s windows 10 pro

Not to worry, re the Brave Version; and tx for the info.

Have you tried the TOR browser(?):

https://www.torproject.org/download/

Just wondering.

Have you tested the issue by creating an additional Brave Browser Profile for the purpose of testing?

Also, have you been clearing cache, cookies, history, etc.?

For the following, be prepared - back up:

  • tabs (as bookmarks)
  • bookmarks
  • passwords

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://settings/clearBrowserData

Select the Advanced tab

Set Time range to “All time”

ENABLE everything except:

  • Passwords and other sign-in data

(Myself, I would NOT make that exception)
(because I would have a backup prepared.)
(In other words, be prepared.)

Click on the “Clear data” button

I deleted all cache as you asked and nothing changed even after a restart.
I could also use the tor browser but that kinda defeats the whole point of having it in brave

So, you did not try an additional Brave Browser Profile for test purposes?

You could try:

In a Brave Browser New Window, go to:

brave://net-internals/#dns

Click on Clear host cache

Next, same window, select “Sockets” on the left.

Click Close idle sockets

Click Flush socket pools

Quit everything and Restart your computer.

Flush the Windows OS DNS cache:

Open a Command prompt, then run it as an administrator:

  • Right click CMD
  • Click Run as administrator

Type or paste each command below

  • ipconfig /release
  • ipconfig /flushdns
  • ipconfig /renew
  • netsh int ip reset
  • netsh winsock reset

Then Restart your Windows OS computer.

At this point, given that you have the essentials backed up (correct?!), then you may as well reset Brave Browser experimentation - click the “Reset all” button at:

brave://flags

and also Reset Brave Browser:

brave://settings/reset

And quit Brave Browser; then restart your computer.

Sorry for the wait, I had exams and have been pretty busy, so:
1- the new blank profile didn’t work either
2- I already tried the dns things from another post and redid it just to be sure but to no success

So, is resetting my whole browser necessary? I alredy created a blank profile and reinstalled it. If it’s possible, I’d prefer not spending 30 minutes doing that. The thing is that my brave folder is pretty large so I neeed to copy it to my slow hdd and that takes a while. Just backing my profile took 10 minutes to copy idk why it’s so large

@Draconic404 guess I’d be curious, does it work on any of the other release channels? From what I’m seeing, you are on normal Brave. But then there’s Brave Beta and Brave Nightly, if you want to install either. Might help to know if any problems that way for you.

If going by an article from Brave, https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/4405557480589-Why-does-my-tor-window-say-Status-Disconnected

If you find yourself in such a state, please try the following troubleshooting steps to get the tor client up and running again:

  • Toggle Tor settings: In Brave, go to Settings --> Privacy and Security --> Tor windows and toggle the Private window with Tor option off then on again. Doing this will disable Tor and delete the (current) Tor directory on your machine. Switching it back on will re-enable Tor functionality and generate a fresh Tor directory.
  • Check network admin settings: It is possible that your network admin is blocking Tor access. Check with your network administrator or, if you are the admin, check your network settings to see if access to the tor network is blocked. You can also test to see if this is the case by visiting the official Tor website, as most networks blocking Tor access will also block access to their site.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to replicate. I mean, sometimes it sits on Disconnected for a few seconds:

But it doesn’t take long before it starts connecting and manages to connect.

Re “large”

Consider what may be deleted:

Re Tor browser

Might be worth the time to test its ability to connect.

So the tor browser works perfectly, just a little slow but that’s to be expected with tor

I’ve already done those steps from the article to no result, tor is already active and the official tor website loads fine.

I tried brave nightly and got the same problem, no connection after 5 minutes

I also looked at the link you sent 289wk and I am not sure what I sould delete; do I backup my profile and delete everything else?

@mattches and @fmarier wanted to tag in to see if either of you have more guidance.

@Draconic404 with it being Friday night, it’s lower chance of hearing back from them until next week or so. If I’m honest, I’ll probably forget about this post by the end of the weekend and am sure they’ll have a lot of notifications to juggle. In saying that, might be beneficial if you can try to tag on Tuesday if none have responded, just to kind of draw attention and hope to get attention before the week is up.

@Draconic404,
Are you trying to connect to the Tor network on your home network or are you seeing that it won’t connect while on a work or public network?

on home network, to my knowledge nothing changed on my home network during that time

Can you share a screenshot of the Tor Browser settings page (about:preferences#connection) when it works?

and the circuit details for a website:

I cannot, at least currently, since the furthest I’ve gone to making it work since it stopped working is loading at 50% then resetting to not connected

So it’s not even working with the Tor Browser?

oh sorry I just saw brave in your photo and my brain went poof, so here’s the results:

Working without issue

Ok, interesting. It looks like the Tor Browser is simply connecting directly to the tor network (no bridges or anything special).

One small difference is that Brave is not currently using the very latest tor daemon (we are one or two minor releases behind – no security fixes were present in these releases). I am planning to upgrade this after the holidays, so maybe that will resolve the issues you are experiencing.
