The automatic sidebar doesn't open on the last tab (or only once or twice) and only on half of the tabs in total

Description of the issue:
The bug exists since the final release 1.78.94. Up to 1.77.101 it still works fine. Yesterday I downloaded different final versions from Github starting with 1.75.178 and then manually updated each time to the next one without an internet connection. This allowed me to find out which version caused the bug. Finally, I also tested the latest nightly, but the bug is still there.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Settings as follows (as a precaution)
    Get started:
“On startup”: “Open the New Tab page”
    “New tab page shows”: “Dashboard”
    Appearance:
sidebar: set to “autohide” (“show on mouseover”) and “show on the left” (easier for the test but “show on the right” behaves identically).

  2. Close and Restart Brave

  • Move the mouse to the left edge of the window several times. The sidebar does not open (or only opens once or twice).

  • Open a second tab via the plus sign. The sidebar does not open there either (or only opens once or twice).

  • Now click on the first tab and test it there again. It now works there.

  • Switch back to the second tab and open a third tab using the plus sign. On this third tab it does not work again (or only once or twice). Now it no longer works on the first tab either, but now works on the second tab instead.

  • Switch back to the third tab and use the plus sign to open a fourth tab, on which it will not work again (or only once or twice). Now it works on the third and on the first tab. It can also be the second tab instead of the first. This can change during the test, but I could not find out what triggers the change. It probably depends on what the mouse moved over in the meantime. The fact is, however, that it only ever works with half of the tabs and so far never with the last tab opened.

Brave Version:
1.80.113 on Windows 10 22H2 (19045.5965)

Additional Information:
It started with the final desktop version 1.78.94 and is included in all final versions after that. I even tested the nightly 1.82.35 yesterday, but it also contains the bug.

First – excellent bug report. Really appreciate all the details. Makes testing and issue filing so much easier and less back and fourth so thank you for that.

And yes, looks like this is a Windows specific issue as I can’t reproduce on macOS, but on Windows I do see what you’re seeing. Definitely seems to a be a bug of some kind although I haven’t noticed it up to this point (I typically have my sidebar setup this way by default anyway). Good catch.

I’ve filed the following issue for the devs to review:

Thank you very much, Matt! :+1:
I just realized that I unfortunately mixed up the two version numbers. Correct is: v1.77.101 does not contain the bug, it came with v1.78.94.
Sorry.
