Sync to other devices empty

Description of the issue:
After ? time usually a week, the option to send links to other devices goes away. Logging into said devices will bring it back but wondered if it could emulate other browsers that let you send a link once they are synced in the system as they are identifiable.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

  1. Don’t log into browser for several days
  2. Devices eventually all fall off of send to list
  3. Become sad

Reproduces how often:
100% after several days.

Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu): most recent ones on all platforms (iOS windows Ubuntu Linux and macOS).

Type of devices currently running on the Sync chain in question:
2 mac, 1 iPhone, 3 windows, 1 linux

Additional Information:

Mic check? 1…2….3? Is this thing on? :slight_smile:

I don’t use Sync, so can’t really help. If others who do use Sync do/do not experience the same then,

  1. This may be an issue specific to you. You could try testing with different profiles and Brave versions (Release, Beta, Nightly) to see if behavior occurs in all scenarios.

  2. this may be a “working as intended” issue and a feedback/feature request may need to be created

  3. this is a “bug” which Brave needs to address and an Issue Report should probably be created on Brave GitHub.

Hopefully, another Community Member with more experience will pop in and provide more info or offer suggestions. Like, could this be an extension interfering with sync? Anything in brave://sync-internals that may shed some light on issue or help? Have you tried creating a new sync chain?

Brave Support may be able to find out from Dev Team which is which. Support usually doesn’t work weekends, but I will tag this post and hopefully someone from Support will get back to you.

I can’t seem to find anything except it used to be a working as intended by Google Chrome a year ago. Recently they appear to have changed it so that perhaps it won’t drop my other PCs after x amount of time but I can’t find any mention of how long a device stays in the sync list until it’s dropped off.

@JeffNoVA,
As far as I know this option should not disappear unless the device itself has been removed from the chain. Are you still encountering this issue?

I want to make one clarification, the option to send to devices, never disappears, but the devices that I can send to in that list disappear, even though they have not been removed from the chain. I had to wait a month but I had 3 devices that were ‘active last month’ and 2 were dropped off. Note that I have closed all browsers on these machines.

This is the same behavior in all Chromium based browsers ie after several weeks if I haven’t logged into those devices (usually my servers) they are gone so I can no longer send direct except in a competing non Chromium browser.

Perhaps if I leave Brave and other Chromiym based browsers running on those devices it’ll stay active?

I wanted to update since it’s been exactly 3 months since I last posted - it seems that this issue was fixed / corrected on one of the most recent updates. I have two devices that say that they have not sync’d for over a month and are still in the device list to send pages to. I presume that we can mark this one as PEBKAC.

@JeffNoVA,
Thank you for the update and for sticking with the issue. I’m not sure if it’s something that was fixed via upstream in Chromium or on our end but glad to hear that it is working.
