So many performance problems - Brave and iPadOS 18.3.2

I am having to quit Brave several times per day because it just isn’t working properly.

There is a problem with background audio and YouTube (playing even after the window has been closed) which I have been told is being addressed - that requires Brave to be quit.

On some commercial sites like currys.co.uk, after clicking on search results, either the page does not load properly or huge chunks of it are invisible and then it starts flickering when you scroll. Once this has started, it affects all other open tabs and Brave has to be quit.

Now, I just noticed on Twitter/X, which often does not work at all with Brave, when looking at a user’s account and their posts, some have the text missing and some have media missing. Again, Brave must be quit.

With my previous iPad Pro, I had the problem of background tabs reloading so that text that I had either input in a form or text on an updated page would be lost. Quitting Brave obviously does not help in this situation.

And then there are times when Brave just quits anyway.

I’m using an iPad Pro 12.9" 5th Gen iPadOS 18.3.2 (16GB, 1TB - less than half used) so it should be able to handle having half a dozen tabs open without throwing a tantrum and I don’t seem to be having any issues with other apps.

I’m sticking with Brave because I hope it will improve but it is VERY frustrating.

Trying to make a simple list of your basic issues:

Background audio and YouTube playing, even after the window has been closed

Commercial site search results: loading and scrolling thru - becomes sporadic, stumbling behavior

Twitter / X user’s account posts not fully rendered

Brave Browser “just quits” sometimes

Same problems here. High cpu when iPad is sleeping. Tabs continue to play audio after close

I definitely have the audio playing after the tab is closed. Also, it sometimes plays audio from two sources/tabs at the same time.

This has gotten worse in the last couple of weeks.

For now, remember to stop audio before closing/changing tabs.

That’s easier said than done. When I open a YouTube video page, the audio has already started playing before the video plays. If I hit play, I get double audio. Sometimes when I stop the video, both audios are playing but in any case, I think that clicking on the video link on the main/search YouTube page initiates a preview before the video page is opened.

Closing tabs - even all tabs - does not stop the audio, only quitting and restarting.

The other problem I have, pages only half loading/displaying and flickering is getting worse/more frequent. I’m not a heavy web browser by any means but I am needing to quit 5-10 times per day for one reason or another. I’m just kind of glad that I’m not the only person with the problem otherwise I might think that there was a problem with my iPad.

Incidentally, I offloaded Brave and re-installed it (I didn’t want to completely uninstall and lose my bookmarks and history) but that was obviously not successful.

I too have the issue of videos playing on their own.

I’m an all day iPad user. I normally pick several videos to watch, long press, and open in a new tab in the background. Right now, about 1/2 the time, the background video starts to play, interrupting the currently playing video.

I can confirm these bugs are present in iPad os 18.4 as well.

+1

This has become so problematic that I have had to switch to another browser. The inconvenience of having to restart Brave every 10 minutes is unacceptable, the app is basically unusable for me now.

iPad 18.4 and Brave app is always updated to the most recent version. This has been happening for months and just keeps getting worse.

Just as an illustration, this is what the this page of the forum (albeit cropped) looked like for me before I just relaunched Brave; most text elements are missing.

This happens on Twitter/X, eBay and many online stores.

same problems here: on the youtube start page I click on a video to open in new tab and it autoplays and would not stop, the the video in the new tab starts to play, I hear two audios with some seconds of delay and only quiting brave stops the audio. HIGHLY ANOYING. since I use brave to watch youtube dayly. started with ios 18.2 and still is the case with ios 18.4. Brave Version 1.76 (77)
please give me a solution somebody

Same here. I do hope an updated version is coming very soon. This version is hardly usable.

iPadOS 18.4.0 user here. Much like others, I get that “video keeps playing in the background” bug whenever I close a window. However, it’s not limited to YouTube. Any site that plays a video will do this. It’s very discouraging.

Here’s hoping a fix is in the works pretty soon.

Is anybody actually looking into this?

It feels like there have been two or three updates to Brave for Mac since I first posted this whist the iPad version has not changed and it is getting a bit infuriating to have to reboot Brave so many times just to shut the background audio up.

Sorry for the trouble everyone. This was intended to be resolved in the last release, but ran into further trouble. The latest can be seen here and we expect to have it fixed soon.

That’s fixed the background audio problem, thanks.

As nobody has chipped in on the other problems I mentioned in my opening post, I assume I am the only one having them.

Maybe this update has flushed them out too but I’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m unable to replicate the issue you see on currys.ok.uk or X with Standard settings enabled under Shields. Do you see this issue in a Private Window and/or with Shields disabled?

If you experience any unexpected Brave exits please feel free to send us the crash logs and we’d be happy to take a look. Instructions below.

  • Go to Settings on your device (not on Brave, but on your iPhone or iPad)
  • Go to Analytics & Improvements
  • Click on Analytics Data
  • In the search bar on top, look for Client, this will be Brave.
  • You will be looking for something that looks like Client-2023-15-XXXXXX.ips

It’s hasn’t just been currys.co.uk, it has been quite a few websites - including this forum (see screenshot in earlier post) - but it doesn’t happen all the time. It happens with both Shields up and down but I haven’t tried in a private window - that might be difficult to determine because once the page has ‘gone’ the only way to load it properly is to restart Brave and I don’t tend to use private windows - except by accident as ‘Open in a New Tab’ and ‘Open in a New Private Tab’ are right next to each other in the contextual menu.

If it happens again (hopefully it doesn’t), all I can do is copy the URL, paste it into a private window and see what happens.
