Scam Airdrop email with safebrowsers[.][info]

Description of the issue:
I received a suspicious email containing a link to a potentially malicious website: safebrowsers[.] [info]. The email claimed that there was an issue with my account and instructed me to click on the link to resolve the problem. However, I believe this is a phishing attempt designed to steal my personal information.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open the suspicious email in Brave browser.
  2. Hover over the link safebrowsers[.] [info] to check if the destination URL matches the displayed text.
  3. Attempt to visit the link in a secure environment (e.g., a virtual machine or sandbox) to investigate its contents.

Actual Result:
Upon hovering over the link, I noticed that the destination URL did not match the displayed link text. When I visited the link in a secure environment, it led to a suspicious website that requested personal information, including login credentials and financial details.

Expected result:
I expect Brave to warn users about potential phishing attempts and block suspicious websites like safebrowsers[.] [info] to protect users’ personal information and prevent them from falling victim to scams.

Reproduces how often:
This specific issue occurred once, but I have received similar scam emails containing suspicious links in the past.

Operating System and Brave Version:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home, 64-bit
  • Brave Version: 1.45.123 (Chromium: 109.0.5414.74)

Additional Information:

  • The scam email was sent from a suspicious email address: [email protected]
  • The email contained several grammatical and spelling errors, which is a common characteristic of phishing attempts.
  • I have reported the email as spam and blocked the sender to prevent future scam attempts.

@cryptocomo,
Thank you for reporting — however, in the future, please do not include links that lead to sites that are malicious to ensure that other users do not click on it (by accident or otherwise). I have gone ahead and edited your post on your behalf to ensure that the links cannot be clicked.

As for your concern:

The browser does do this — this is what the Safe browsing feature does (found in brave://settings/security). This is a list used by Brave and other browsers that prevents users from visiting malicious websites, downloading malicious content, among other things.

However, this feature is updated with the browser. If the browser is not fully up to date, it is also lacking important security updates. At this time I see that your’e using v1.45.123. This version is several versions behind the latest — the latest version released (as of today) is v1.65.114.

Please update your browser to the latest build to ensure that the important fixes and security updates are applied.
