Has there been any progress made on removing tracking parameters to URLs before clicking on a link? Namely, the “utm” parameters, but there are also others that Firefox has recently added too (https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/vne4nt/new_firefox_privacy_feature_strips_urls_of/ )?
I would prefer native support from the Brave development team rather then trusting a 3rd party small developer (e.g. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/remove-fbclid-and-utm/ehkdoijaaigomfliimepliikhjkoipob )

Do you mean like this?
In order to stay one step ahead of online trackers, Brave regularly releases new privacy features and improvements. This post discusses three recent changes in Brave that each help make the web a more privacy, and person, respecting platform.
Next generation Brave browser for Android, Linux, macOS, Windows. - Query String Filter · brave/brave-browser Wiki
Regarding utm
I note the Reddit thread has some discussion about that one in particular, which seems to describe why this one is not included – apparently in either browser.

Brave already removes major tracking URL like fbclid, mkclid, gclid etc.
Though there is some extra developments to be done regarding it.

Supporting removeparam, will give us the ability to filter out tracking bits of … a url.
https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Static-filter-syntax#removeparam
https://kb.adguard.com/en/general/how-to-create-your-own-ad-filters?aid=16593#removeparam-modifier
To test in uBO. add `||google.com^$removeparam=/(num|oq|gs_l)/` or `||google.*^$removeparam=/(num|oq|gs_l)/`
Test the following url: https://www.google.com/search?num=100&q=google&oq=google&gs_l=serp.3..0l10.7976.8565.0.9999.6.6.0.0.0.0.358.617.2-1j1.2.0....0...1c.1.64.serp..4.2.615.BQ3ZvdzuPGE
(In order of codes, expanded also works)
```
$removeparam=num,domain=google.com
$removeparam=oq,domain=google.com
$removeparam=gs_l,domain=google.com
```
The above google.com url simply becomes `https://www.google.com/search?q=google`

Can be filtered down too: `||bbc.com^$queryprune=/(xtor.*|at_.*)/` => https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-56637573
A few more filters tested https://0bin.net/paste/vleyxFEC#xMx8TzvreSdTwxUcbVOCFYesnjjXk4wcKCaD-U3bgMR (on various news sites). Only one bug was attempting to filter `news.google.com` links would cause redirection issues.

A privacy focused custom filter list https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Dandelion… Sprout/adfilt/master/LegitimateURLShortener.txt from https://github.com/DandelionSprout/adfilt does not work. It can be added in brave://adblock, but it does nothing.
I added it in UBO, and it shortens or removes tracking parameters in a URL (it works in brave UBO extension). You can experiment/try it on these sites https://github.com/DandelionSprout/adfilt/discussions/163#discussioncomment-715449.
The issue is slightly related to https://github.com/brave/adblock-rust/issues/166.
I think the current brave ad blocker can only make changes to webpage scripts/elements, but cannot do it to URL's in url/address bar.
