Random websites I've never visited appearing in search bar suggestions

Description of the issue:

Typing certain letters into the address bar produces suggestions for random websites that I have never heard of nor visited and that are not bookmarked. For instance, entering “sd” produces a suggestion for teensdigest.com, “nf” for infogalactic.com, “hd” for slashdot.org, etc. There are many of these. I have auto-complete URLs turned off.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Type in some letters…

Expected result:

Not having random sites pop up… and, I should hope, not having my entries in the address bar sent to some autocomplete server.

Brave bundles ~500 domains that we think users might want autocompleted, so that some URL bar entires can be autocompleted for the user w/o a network request.

So it’s “different” with the auto-complete option found in Settings.
