In the recent Community Call, some of the people from Brave shared things they are working on and should be released in the future. I wanted to try to highlight some of them for anyone unaware. You can read short summaries below or you can listen in to the recording of the call at https://youtu.be/aI_SXUeW8IM
-
Solana DApp support is being worked on for mobile devices. But it is now currently out for Desktop.
-
In September, will be more wallet partners for Brave Wallet (no, that’s not Rewards)
-
Playlist is being worked on for Android. If you’re unaware what that is, it allows you to add videos or audio from any site to it and is even able to download the video to watch offline. This feature is live on iPhone now and they are hoping to get it on Android soon. (for individuals, you can’t share the content you download for offline viewing)
-
Along with Playlist, will be a feature for Creators to be able to create their own Playlist they can share with fans. Creators will be able to earn from this as well.
-
iOS will be getting De-AMP and Shield filter lists to choose from, which especially will help to increase shield efficiency in particular countries. (Think he said this will be in the next release)
-
Payout Status API made to be cleaner. This is server side which will show more accurate status in regards to payments coming out. Believe he said this is version 1.43, which is next update.
-
Rewards panel is now Web UI. This will provide more flexibility and better performance, so not as demanding on your browser/device. This comes out in 1.43
-
Tipping UI on Android is being improved to show what Creators have for image, to do more custom amounts easier, etc. They are working on this now, no timeline given on release.
-
brave://rewards
settings page to be more responsive. As-is, coding between devices is different. They are changing so Android and Desktop Rewards code is the same. It will help them with debugging and to fix some of the issues people have been having with Rewards panel on Android. But in addition, it also is going to help such as when resizing the window and anything similar. You can find it in v1.44 of Brave, which is currently in Nightly as of Aug 25, 2022. -
New custodial partner is in the works. They have written the specs for it but still can’t tell us which custodial partner or how long until available.
-
Rewards is going to be getting unified with Brave Wallet! This isn’t going to be done in the way many had been hoping, but what is going to happen is that vBAT will be stored in a Rewards card in Brave Wallet. From that card, you can transfer it to Uphold/Gemini at will. (Release should be Q1, so look at early next year)
-
NOTE
This might mean you have ways to move BAT without custodial accounts, but I failed to ask this question specifically. BAT will be more decentralized, so more options to move it around, but we’ll have to learn more as it gets closer to completion. Be careful on assumptions made until we get more official details.
-
NOTE
-
Due to Rewards/Wallet integration that will be added, BAT will be stored in a smart contract rather than your device. This means as long as you have your Wallet private key, you’ll be able to have it backed up. (I think this means synced between devices too by doing this, but more on this as we learn more in the future)
-
Cross custodial tipping will be available because of Rewards integration with Brave Wallet.
- To be more specific, the new cards model basically helps maximize tipping possibilities between users and creators, and makes it easier to present available tipping paths between users and creators. So, even if there isn’t a specific cross-custodial tipping path (e.g., there is no feasible path between Uphold and Gemini), the new model should still improve tipping possibilities because users can have multiple cards (Ethereum-BAT, Solana SPL-BAT, Rewards vBAT, Uphold-BAT, Gemini-BAT, etc.) all simultaneously. Creators will also be able to expose their own self-custody addresses, and we could probably expose on-chain deposit addresses for their custodial accounts as well.
-
Creators will be able to receive tips to multiple platforms. Solana, Gemini, Uphold, Brave, etc. In other words, making tips stretch more across chains now that we’re getting Brave Wallet for cross chain along with the platform.
-
Pay With BAT will come sometime after the Rewards change, which is happening around Q1. For those not familiar with that, this will be a way Brave will have for us to use BAT to pay for products or services on participating sites.
-
“Hopefully” most workable countries will be back by the end of this year. Issue is that regulators are getting more aggressive that are having significant impacts and results will vary based on changes.
-
Substack is on shortlist for Creator support.
