Description of the issue:
-
I had 2 accounts in a system using Windows 11 which I needed to sync to new system Windows 10. One of them was synced since months and the other wasn’t. I used the sync code and synced the un-synced profile between the devices. Now I got all bookmarks, passwords, history of both profiles in the Windows 10 desktop, as expected.
-
Now that I want to clear the profile from the first system[Windows 11], I went to profile manager and pressed the X button which prompted that all browser stuff will be deleted, and also didn’t see any prompt that said ‘please backup if you haven’t’.
-
When I deleted the accounts in Windows 11 system, I expected it to be there in the new system that I synced to, but all the browser stuff has disappeared from Windows 10 system now, despite one of them already in sync for the past 6 months, which was not what I expected.
-
I expected some sort of auto backup might be there in the Windows 11 system that I deleted, but unfortunately after reading the forums, I realized the whole content is in either ‘Default’ folder or the ‘Profile #’ which seems to have disappeared.
-
In order to recover, the only option was to use a recovery software. I did the same, and recovered both the deleted profile content folders.
-
As per another forum, the solution was to make a new Profile in the browser, which will auto create a Profile folder. And then to copy paste the recovered profile folder content into the newly created Profile folder. I assume the bookmark file is in ‘Bookmark’ and Bookmark.bak’, the password file is in ‘LoginData’, the history content in the ‘history’ file. - all these files were present in the recovered Profile folder.
-
As per another forum, the password seems to be OS encrypted, which I suppose means that it can be only opened in the same OS or system unless exported as CSV.
-
As per another forum, if the ‘.bak’ extension is removed from the Bookmark file, then It’ll appear on the Browser’s bookmarks.
-
Despite reading many community support posts and following all of the above accordingly, I still couldn’t get the browser to display the bookmarks history and password. If I could, I can immediately take a backup of bookmark as html and passwords as csv
Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.
Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):
Will be uploading in this thread.
Expected result:
- Bookmarks, Password, History all to be appearing in the newly synced device.
- Recovered profile content - displaying in the browser.
Reproduces how often:
Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave
page in the main menu):
- In the deleted Windows 11 system - v1.67.123
- In synced Windows 10 system - v1.67.123
Additional Information:
-
For the bookmarks, I found an online github.io link that converts the .bak file into HTML. I gave it a try by creating another random profile, made bookmarks, then took the bookmark file and converted it to HTML, which successfully did. However the bookmark file that I recovered, when uploaded for conversion, however showed ‘Failed’.
-
Would also like to know whether in the profiles folder, just the individual files alone, is enough to recover or are all these Bookmark , Login Data, History file has dependency on other files or folders?
