Please explain how "Improve search suggestions" works under the hood

Under brave://settings/search there’s this setting called “Improve search suggestions”.

I know what this setting does, but I’m curious about the specific details on how it works.

When this is enabled, does search.brave.com handle/provide all of the suggestions that you get?

If I use Google as a primary search engine, does Brave still handle the suggestions on its own? Will Google only get data from me once I press enter on my search query and NOT while I’m still typing?

Another reason that I’m curious is that I’m a former Vivaldi user, and the search engine manager in Vivaldi expected you to provide your own “Suggestions URL”. (https://help.vivaldi.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/Search-engine-settings-1.png)
