It’s very difficult to open new tab from brave mobile browser homepage. Please add + button on homepage like chrome browser
if you disable Settings → Homepage , the home button should be replaced by New Tab button.

if that’s not your liking, long press the tabs button should open up a menu with the New Tab option, as an alternative way.
