PDF download caused data loss

Description of the issue:
Upon downloading a PDF file, it says “Failed - Download error”. When I go to check the folder its been downloaded to, the failed PDF is there, but it has wiped the contents of all other items in the folder.

It also created a duplicate of the folder in the same directory, and you can see the creation dates are new.


I am unable to find my lost data.

This happened on Windows 10 Enterprise 1909 Build 18363.778

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. I downloaded the pdf from here but this requires authentication. I opened a PDF in the browser by middle clicking to open in new tab.
  2. I then went to the PDF tab and hit download, saved the file in my D:\ as IS4420Sum19.pdf.
  3. Went to the download folder, the PDF was there but all other data was wiped.

Expected result:
Well I expected not to lose a semesters worth of college data by downloading a PDF.

Additional Information:
Not sure what to put here. Can’t find data in the recycle bin or any temp folders.
