When I open a webpage with a download link for a file, Brave Browser doesn’t ask whether I want to save the file or just view it. There’s no “Open with…” option, for example, to directly open a PDF document. Browsers like Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari offer this option (see attached - in german). What setting should I choose in Brave to make it prompt me? The option under Settings - Downloads, “Ask where to save each file before downloading,” doesn’t make any difference in this regard. I don’t have any other options there.
I’m not sure if I understood your message correctly. The txt file you provided can only be opened after saving it. The pdf, however, could be viewed in the browser without needing to save it, which is great! I can’t do anything with the Sysquake program. You can open many files, but only after downloading them first. However, that’s not what I want: I’d like the option to either save a downloadable file or open it directly in the browser without saving it. This works with your pdf but not with any other files. I’m always only given the option to save them to my PC. In the context menu (see the one for Firefox above), the “Open with” option is missing.
I always allow the “Download PDFs” selection, because I have learned - with a variety of browsers and occasions and network issues, I have a better chance of downloading and then viewing a PDF file with a standalone PDF application like Acrobat Reader or Apple’s Preview.
The “Open PDFs in Brave” was problematic 2 years ago, and I do not know the current status, other than by reports, here, such as yours.
One problem that users (previous years) had, was that, they had installed one or more PDF edit/view -type extensions that would struggle with each other and/or with Brave Browser’s built-in PDF viewing process.
Thank you for your detailed response. Unfortunately, it didn’t lead to success; neither the “Download PDFs” setting nor the “Open PDFs in Brave” option resolved the issue.
In the meantime, I’ve tried disabling popups, the ad blocker, and cookies. Perhaps the website expects certain elements to remain unblocked, which might allow Brave to give me the “Open PDF” or “Save PDF” options. Unfortunately, this hope was also in vain.
Additionally, Brave doesn’t seem to remember my settings for “Always disable the ad blocker for a specific site,” so some pages won’t load, or streams won’t work. Disabling the “Forget me when I close this site” option didn’t help either. I have to manually disable Shields each time I restart the browser. Disabling “Clear browsing data on exit” and enabling “Widevine is enabled” also didn’t make a difference.
A lot of issues. I’m not ruling out the possibility that I may be at fault, but I’m running out of ideas.
Yep — there are tons of documents we’re working on updating presently. I will go ahead and edit the doc right now — although it may need a complete revamp.
