NOTICE: Unexplained Data Loss Issue

you did it!

thank you konder1999

I’m using a MacBook Air (Sonoma 14.5) and noticed today that the “Passwords” page is now missing. I know my passwords are still there somewhere because Brave still offers the passwords in autofill situations.

This issue started sometime after August 2nd, 2024 and it wasn’t after a restart or a browser crash. My updates happen automatically so it may have happened after the latest update.

Current Brave version: 1.68.134 Chromium: 127.0.6533.88 (official build) (x86_64)

I do not have Histogram.

I just lost the “Passwords” page. Bookmarks and user history are still observable at this time.

I’m not using a password manager extension.

I’m not using Brave Sync.

I’m not using a separate/different browser profile than I normally do.

Profile hasn’t been changed.

Data wasn’t cleared.

Data isn’t set to clear on exit

No changes to my MacOS.

I didn’t change my system password.

Hope this can be fixed soon for Mac users.

…and they are gone again

linux mint did update brave, so i thought that would be the ticket
but alas, the ticket was back to where brave is broken and unrepairable

the good news is i have moved on to librewolf and have no issues with passwords, or massive amounts of ram being gobbled up by brave
no more laptop fans running continuously

i still like brave though

Hi folks,
Just a heads-up that the recent Password Manager-related issues have been identified, fixed, and uplifted to both 1.68.x and 1.69.x.
Depending on the release schedule, we may release the fix via Griffin, too, to get it to you guys ASAP.
Here’s some background regarding the issue.

Brave Version 1.69.168 Chromium: 128.0.6613.138 (Official Build) (64-bit)
OS Version Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS

  1. Brave refuses to save passwords for sites I visit even though I am prompted to do so.
  2. If I add a new site and password to the Password Manager, it saves. But as soon as I close and exit Brave, all are gone.
  3. I do NOT have any settings turned on to clear out my sites and passwords.
  4. This has been happening on all my machines after installing Brave for the first time.
  5. I have no extensions
  6. I am NOT using sync. Nor am I trying to share password files.
  7. I do NOT have multiple Brave profiles or OS logins.

Yep. Trying to manage my passwords in Brave is a nightmare…

This is still a problem with 1.69 on Slackware Linux.
Yesterday everything had got logged out again and passwords forgotten. I logged back into a couple of sites and today they have been logged out again.
It usually lasts longer than 1 day though, so it seems like the cause is completely random.

I just had this problem for the first time.

I’m using Windows 10

Brave Version v1.70.126

The browser crashed, and I lost the log in information and passwords when Brave restarted. I don’t remember if I did the update right before, but I don’t think so. The passwords seem to be in the Login Data file.

I can’t see the most recent crash on brave://crashes, so I don’t have the crash ID. I remember choosing no for something about crash reports when I launched the browser before I was aware of the lost data problem, so that might have something to do with this.

I still have the bookmarks and history, it’s just the websites I was logged out of and the saved passwords.

I am not using a password manager extension.

I am not using sync or other profiles.

I downloaded the histograms and can send them.

I need some passwords back urgently and tried the chrome://flags/#clear-undecryptable-passwords fix but it didn’t work. I also tried installing various other browsers and importing data from Brave to access the passwords but that hasn’t worked either.

I would appreciate any suggestions to recover the passwords somehow other than these two solutions that haven’t worked for me.

I relaunched Brave this morning (from searchbar) after having shut down my system the previous night. Upon relaunch Brave had a popup saying it hadn’t shut down properly. From there, I agreed to send diagnostics, and clicked restore pages. Then I found that I’d been signed out of everything and Passwords were gone.

Brave is up to date

I don’t have/use separate browser profiles and am not currently in one,

I haven’t cleared browsing data,

I haven’t changed system passwords

I don’t think it was a crash, and brave://crashes says the last crash happened in september.

No I was not using any password manager other than the one built into Brave

No I do not use Brave Sync

Additionally, I have checked Login data with a DB viewer and all data appears to be present. I also have a histogram I can share.

I will say, I wasn’t able to see any of the passwords in the password_notes section of database, but login info were all present under logins.

I tried working through a few of the workarounds mentioned in this thread, but they have not brought back the lost passwords. When I booted up Brave this morning, I re-signed into a few services (just email) and I’d saved those passwords again and they appear to have stayed even with restarting the browser, as in password manager seems to work fine with any new entries. They’ve also been added to the Login data file, but password manager doesn’t seem to register any of the other entries in there. When importing to firefox, only the new entries from this morning were moved.

Any help either resolving this issue or being able to view the passwords in database would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I had a similar problem, and I couldn’t find a solution, I had reset my PC due to a problem but kept the windows.old so when I made a fresh Brave install and copied the Default folder to my surprise everything worked besides the passwords, I tried everything in this post but it didn’t work, so my last attempt was to go to Settings > Reset Settings and clear it, I then went to copy the password files again and this time I went to User Data copied the old ‘Local State’ and made a backup of this new one and replaced the new Local State with the old one, I started Brave again and voila the passwords showed up.
I made an account to reply here for anyone who may still have this problem.
In conclusion replace the new Local State in User Data with the old one and copy the password files to the new User Data/Default folder.
