I updated to the newest version and find it very unstable. The site goes in and out and then turns black. If I am watching a video on one tab the whole browser goes down.
IOs anyone else finding this new version unstable?

Not me personally, but others are… I’m running Mojave though, I wonder if that has something to do why brave seems fine to me… Assuming others running Catalina?
I am on Catilina as well. I am hoping it settles in, otherwise I will need to return to the previous version if possible
well before doing that, maybe disable all your extensions first and see if that helps… if it does turn on an extension and see if it’s stable… if it is goto the next extension, etc…
