New update changed tab shape

Dude… Did they hire some incompetent UI/UX designer minimum wage in Bangladesh to “redesign” their tabs? This is UGLY!!! They aren’t even testing this with themes, the curved tabs take up more space, they ruined the top few pixels where you couldn’t even click them anymore (it’s actually just unbelievable how this alone even got through the the public). It’s so unbelievable just how much of a mess this us. Just revert it back to the square tabs or give us the option. Holy crap, I’m about to just change browsers because of this. It’s so incredibly ugly and incompetent. Avoiding disasters like this is why I switched from Chrome to Brave, but years later, here we are!

Why is everything, everywhere so broken now??? Why are people getting hired to make and approve things that clearly don’t even work? Why is everything ugly now and nothing beautiful anymore? Please stop being yet another company doing this stuff and someone over there who knows what they’re doing just come in and fix this mess…

Could not agree more with this!

I agree…this design is very ugly.

@marlonr Have you tried going back to default? It seems like you have disabled Updated horizontal tabs design in order to have the design you are sharing. If you have it default (which is enabled), then it looks more like below:

Oh yeah, I definitely have it set as that. I took a screenshot of the image the other person shared. I also checked it out once using the flag and quickly switched back lol

Mine’s still pathetically and amateurly broken.

Still the same ugly, misplaced tab.

    Still broken.

    Still broken.

Update, update… But there is no normal tab, a tab, you know, as in a filing cabinet, the furniture, not something wobbly, and really poorly designed like this: a board that floats… Is there a theme or hack to restore the tabs??

I want the old design back, the new one sucks and its ugly. How long will it freaking take Brave Developers to fix it???

@ZacharyPeynirci It’s unlikely this will be “fixed” anytime soon. Brave has made some changes, as mentioned earlier in the topic, but any further updates would likely come from the Chromium base, which has a much larger development team. Brave is a smaller team with a lot on their plate, so this isn’t a high-priority issue at the moment.

This doesn’t explain why the Brave tabs looks worse than the latest Chromium builds. Surely it would be less effort to use the same design as the Chromium base and not maintain a forked version.

I was using this until I was forced into it, I am having a bit of problems with the new tab shape. Brave should keep updating the fundamentals of their browser, but just revert the tab shape.

I also want to add my frustration with these chrome-like extra spacing changes. I just opened Brave this morning and there’s all the extra padding on bookmarks now, plus the rounding which just make me cringe.

I just don’t understand why we cannot just have something “simple, easy and flat that works”.

What are padding and extra spaces for? They are totally useless, do not add any functionality or extra feature, zero.

Can we please have a simple and smooth layout without frills available? Can we at least have an option to switch to a flat design without spacing extras? Make it optional. One streamlined and one with all the spacing in the world.

thanks

I liked this new default dark and light mode colours, helps to focus more on website than the browser itself

Please send Chromium team a message https://issues.chromium.org/issues/330589210?pli=1 dont know if is gonna work or they even look at it

This is hardly accurate, as the problem was introduced by a Brave update, not Chromium’s, so a fix (no quotes - it IS an error) could also come from it.

I believe the utterly wrong mindset of some development teams (cough… cough… Arc Browser… cough… cough…) might be starting to infect Brave as well. Pity.

Update:

  • Version 1.70.123 Chromium: 129.0.6668.89 (Official Build) (64-bit)
    Same broken UI

Version 1.70.126 Chromium: 129.0.6668.100 (Official Build) (64-bit)

All messed up yet

that’s crazy! brave should have just inherited the chromium style if supporting touch screen devices is the goal.

Version 1.71.114 Chromium: 130.0.6723.58 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Still no fixes to this broken layout

Quick update here — the spacing issue may be helped by enabling the brave://flags/#brave-compact-horizontal-tabs flag in brave://flags.

As for the tab design, if you want to use the one that is redesigned by Brave that (imo) looks significantly better than the previous implementation that was inherited, then use the default appearance — that is, ensure that the Updated horizontal tabs design is set to Enabled or Default.

Text on tabs is easy to read and grouped tabs design is simplified with the same functionality. I am going to close this thread as the original purpose was to track users who were having trouble with accidentally clicking the “dead space” at the top of the window and somehow devolved into general tabs appearance.

If you would like to open a new thread or “issue” regarding the way the new tab design looks, you’re welcome to do so, but I can tell you now that we are not likely to jump into another redesign anytime soon.
