New update changed tab shape

i had previously asked about this and was able to go into the flags and set horizontal tabs design to Disabled. however now i am unable to do so as even with it disabled I’m still unable to go back to the previous tab shape. to me who usually has anywhere from 80-100 tabs open with the new shape its almost impossible to be able to click the tabs as it needs to be in the direct center, then im unable to right click them as the x button to close is the directly over the tab, with the old style of tabs i was able to just right click on the very top of the tab, which avoided clicking on the x. however now im unable to do so

Posting here to also complain about this.
As I’ve already ran into the dead-zone at the very top of the new tabs when trying to mouse up to them quickly several times within just a hour of updating, and I find it really annoying.
Just wondering if this was a brave change, or was it part of a chromium update.

Same issue. I still don’t get why they insist on using buttons that aren’t connected to the page as a default design. It looks stupid, has a worse UX and even uses more space. I see absolutely no benefit in the new design. There’s a reason it’s called tabs, and not buttons.

Just created account to support this thread.
Come on who thought round tabs is a good idea? I moved the mouse to the top limit to then click on tabs, but now I can’t and just for dumb UI change which is ugly anyways.

Same issue. Why would they want the very top edge of the screen to be unusable?

Before: Tabs connected to content of page, top edge of screen gives an almost tactile user experience.

After: Tab icons disconnected from actual content, top edge cannot be clicked and increased user frustration.

No one is asking for these useless (and functionally terrible) visual changes- and they are breaking the basic motions of the browser that people learn. PLEASE stop these updates

yupp, happening here even with the flag for “new horizontal tab design” disabled. i can’t click the top of tabs like i normally do and the tab in focus has the text cut off on the top

Gotta be honest here — on both macOS and Windows I find it extremely hard to click in that one pixel dead zone above the tab. You can see below that I really have to try to click it:

That said, I believe we are working on patching this behavior and/or adjusting the rounded edges to be less…round, among addressing other issues.

Note that the design change was implemented because the old “square” design does not work well at all with tab groups or split view.

i think it’s only a bug on windows, because i can click the top of the tab fine on my macbook.

but on my 27 inch monitor with windows, the new horizontal tab flag does not work. even when it is enabled, it appears like the default disabled state. and there is a larger pixel gap on the top of the address bar

i generally feel like the topbar/tabbar is far to high honestly.
it’s never been really possible to click above a tab to consistenly drag the browser window around (atleast on windows).

So i’m guessing most people (like me) have gotten acustomed to use the empty spaces in the tabbar to drag the browser around.

With that said, i’ve made a proposal for a slimmer tabbar (with mockup) here, which people who don’t like the new floating design seem to agree with as well.

It’s more in-line with how big the titlebar across windows usually is as well.

There are quite a few of us telling this design is bad and affects UX, and your answer is the you find it “extremely hard to click in that one pixel dead zone” ?

What about this?

Has this been tested for all resolutions? Widescreen, ultrawidescreen, normal size displays? My example is on 2560x1440 resolution.

I personally find it extremely hard to NOT click in that one pixel dead zone, as the few others from here as well. And certainly the tabs groups or split view can work with this new design without that pointless padding/border or whatever that is.

Let’s not try to excuse bad design/product decisions.

My response was to bring this up to the devs and inform them about what our users are experiencing and confirm that we are working on a solution to this, which they are.

Will reply back here with more information when I have it.

May I ask what do you need to click on that 1 pixel zone for?

Why not just click on the huge area to the right of the “+” ?

And if it’s only some people find extremely hard, why not make the changes optional instead of been forced?

Made an account just to explain why maybe only some of us are running into this issue.

Some people (probably mostly Windows users like myself) prefer to use their browser maximized. And importantly, the taskbar on Windows is on the bottom by default. In that situation, the mouse cannot be moved any higher than the maximized window you are viewing.

Over time, people tend to develop habits in how they use their computers. In this case, the habit that developed is that we move the mouse all the way to the very top pixel of the screen whenever we want to interact with a tab. This design change turns our habit against us, because now whenever we try to interact with a tab, it’s no longer under the mouse for us, but instead a pixel or two below it. This drives us absolutely nuts.

It probably seems silly to someone who has not developed this habit, but this change really messes with our everyday usage of this browser. Imagine if randomly for no reason, somehow the ‘G’ key on your keyboard got moved to the numpad somewhere. That’s what this feels like to us.

I hope this helps shed some light on why such a seemingly innocuous change might be cause for so many complaints.

P.S. for what it’s worth, I thought the square design worked better with tab groups. But that’s probably more subjective than not, in my case.

(sorry for the deleted post, I replied to the wrong person before)

These kind of changes are the reason I stopped using Google Chrome… Now this “sh*t” is coming to Brave too?

When you have the habit of using the browser maximised so that the tabs are on the top of your display, you can just throw the mouse cursor to the top of the display to click on a tab. This is super fast and efficient. However, now you have to move your cursor down by a couple of pixels to be able to click on a tab.

So I find it extremely hard to NOT click on that one pixel.

Edit: I have to add that I only have this behaviour when i have the flag " Updated horizontal tabs" set to disabled under brave://flags. So for now I have set it to default in order be be more productive today. But please note that I do not like this design and would prefer to re-disable this option.

with the new tabs design, recently updated, it feels as though you’re not in fullscreen mode on desktop, then you go: hey yes i am in fullscreen. The older ones were better.

Seems chrome also went this way, etc. I just don’t get all these layout changes, which frankly don’t add anything.

My vote goes to 1) bringing all layout with tabs that go up to the top, back and 2) blocky design for the bookmarks too - remove this all rounded, stuff. Square works perfectly… Thank you

The tab shape have not updated for me yet on
Version 1.68.128 Chromium: 127.0.6533.73 (Official Build) (x86_64)
But, as i can see this new UI legit looks ugly and almost feels like half done and tries to forcefully add rounded corners up top to the old brave tab UI

I like this one

or
go all in chrome style so people switching from chrome have same UI experience.

I emphatically agree with all the complaints expressed above. I also confirm that I regularly drag the pointer to the very top of the screen (without any difficulty) to click on another tab, and therefore the new layout is for me, as for many others, a severe downgrade to usability.

What is most unfathomable is the infinite arrogance of the ui designers who, unaware of their own criminal incompetence, decide that not only must now everyone tolerate their ugly and -above all- unusable interface, but also that it be completely impossible to undo the change.

Please excuse my frustrated tone, I am writing this after reading the response from the Browser Support member, which I can only interpret as inflammatory (even if unintentionally so).

I will repeat what I wrote under a post about the same topic yesterday:
Tabs no longer align to the top of the screen! - #6 by DimK

Twenty years using numerous browsers, I have never seen a substantial visual update that did not make the appearance worse . Why do I have to search for how to revert changes whenever there is an update to my software? Why do we have to live like this? Is it not possible to keep the option for people who never ever want to see changes to the ui?

Using Brave after many years of Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, I thought I had found a safe haven from the cancer that is modern interface design. Alas…
