New problem downloading files (PDFs or anything)

Description of the issue:
I’ve been using Brave for years, but in the last couple of weeks it’s stopped letting me download files (usually PDFs). I can download one item after I close Brave and restart, but once that download is complete, it will not let me do that anymore. Note: I still see the little blue circle with a number in it on the Brave icon in my sidebar, as if it’s trying to download something, but nothing happens. And the download does not show up in the “Downloads” window.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Brave
  2. Download one file. All OK.
  3. Download another file; it doesn’t download
  4. If I close Brave and reopen, I can download one file only.

Expected result:
Has been doing this for 2 weeks now.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Version 1.41.100

Three, small files for testing downloading, 2 are also for testing viewing . . .

A simple text (TXT) file. The contents are one word: ‘test’:

A simple PDF file, courtesy of W3C:

A simple DMG (installer type file for Mac OS users), is Sysquake:

Download the 3.1MB ‘.dmg’ file from the developer’s website:

(That DMG file is for testing downloading - NOT for installing/viewing.)

Disable ALL Extensions.

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/clearBrowserData

For tab Basic:

  • Set: Time range:All time
  • Enable: Browsing history
  • Enable: Cookies and other site data (Enable - Signs you out of most sites)
  • Enable: Cached images and files

Click on the ‘Clear data’ button.

(The ‘Clear data’ button also saves the selections.)

Next, go to: brave://settings/cookies

  • Enable: Block third-party cookies
  • Disable: Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows

Next, go to: brave://settings/?search=save+each

For now (ie for testing) . . .

  • Change the location for your downloads (pick some directory other than your usual selection)
  • Change / test the toggle switch setting: Ask where to save each file before downloading

Next, go to: brave://settings/content/pdfDocuments

Set the ‘Default behavior’ (‘Sites automatically follow this setting when you visit them’), to: Open PDFs in Brave

GLOBAL SHIELDS settings:

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/shields

  • Disable: Auto-redirect AMP pages (AMP - Google’s Accelerated Mobile Page)
  • Disable: Prevent sites from fingerprinting me based on my language preferences
  • Trackers & ads blocking: Aggressive
  • Enable: Upgrade connections to HTTPS (aka HTTPS EVERYWHERE)
  • Enable: Block scripts
  • Block fingerprinting (aka Fingerprinting blocking): Strict, may break sites
  • Block cookies (aka Cookie blocking): Only cross-site

Next, go to: brave://flags

  • Disable: Enable De-AMP - requires Relaunching Brave Browser

In a Brave Browser > New Window, go to: brave://settings/security

IF you did not Enable: HTTPS EVERYWHERE in the GLOBAL SHIELDS settings, above, then you may want to . . .

  • Enable: Always use secure connections (aka HTTPS ONLY)

BUT, IF you ENABLED HTTPS EVERYWHERE in the GLOBAL SHIELDS settings, above, then DO NOT enable HTTPS ONLY.

Meanwhile, find the following setting and

  • Disable: Use secure DNS

Exit / Quit applications and Restart your computer.

NOTICE: When testing, or even during ‘normal ops’, there may be a delay in the loading of a webpage for a PDF file download/viewing. Do not be concerned about that delay; it may last 10 to 15 seconds; but then, the progress bar will indicate that the website server is sending the PDF file.

Using the test PDF file link, see if the PDF file will Open in a Brave Browser> New Private Window . . . and then try to download that test PDF file, by choosing the download button, in the upper-right of the following (screenshot) window:

Next, go to: brave://settings/content/pdfDocuments

Set the ‘Default behavior’ (‘Sites automatically follow this setting when you visit them’), to: Download PDFs

Using the test PDF file link, try to download that test PDF file.

IF not successful with both tests, then REMOVE ALL EXTENSIONS; and then, repeat these tests that try to download the test PDF file.

ALSO, test downloading the other two test files (TXT and DMG).

Oh my god, all of these steps? What the heck? From the depth and quickness of your reply, this sounds like a known issue…is this scheduled to be fixed?

And do I have to literally remove extensions? Or just disable?

Frustrated, but thank you for your help.

Do you have any antimalware or other security software on your mac?
