Just installed Brave on my laptop which has OS Ubuntu 22.04
There are two search bars on the home page. One at the top and one near the bottom titled ‘search the web privately’ What is the difference?
@mgstevens I’m assuming you mean on the page below?
If so, the one on the top is the normal address bar that exists in all web browsers. It’s where you type in the web address of the place you want to go and it travels there. And of course these days your browser also lets you choose a default search engine and whatever you search there will go through that search engine web site and give you results.
The one on the bottom is a widget that’s available as part of our Dashboard (also known as New Tab Page). This is strictly for Brave Search, meaning it would be the same as if you traveled to https://search.brave.com/ to do a web search. And it says Search the web privately
only because Brave is trying to market that the search is more private than if you used an engine like Google that would track all of your details and sell your information to advertisers.
In terms of that little widget on the Dashboard, you could modify it to use a different search engine instead by going to Customize → Search
and you can select.
Though from my testing, if you select multiple, it only shows one.
Thanks Saoiray for the detailed reply. Not interested in changing the browser but just want to have the privacy while seaching the net.
It would appear I can do that with the top bar
