Briefly describe your issue:
I lived in an European country where Gemini left and other custodial accounts where not possible so for a longer time I could not receive rewards. Since a few months I live in another European country and I just made an Uphold account but I don’t see any way to connect it.
Further I did read that the country is taken from the identity document used, which I understand but is at the same time not correct as you can only get those documents in a new country when you live there at least 5 years. I have documents which proof I live there now but those are not like passport or driver license.
Does it mean I can’t connect the Uphold account to my Brave account?
And if possible do I then need to reset my rewards account? As now it says that because of the Gemini KYC I don’t live in the right country.
Who is your verified custodian? (Uphold/Gemini/bitFlyer)
Uphold
Are you in a supported region? (see here for list of supported regions)
Yes where I live, no when you say my country of residence is where my passport comes from
Then you wouldn’t be able to connect to Uphold or whatever. The API they built that tells Brave what country you’re from is based on your nationality as provided by your passport.
Correct, as proof of residence is for Uphold or others only. They don’t report that to Brave and is not as valid for KYC/AML. It is incredibly easy to pay someone off to have something sent to an address or put a bill in your name so as to pretend you live somewhere. It is not as easy to get official government identification, which is why they put the emphasis on this.
To get this, you’ll need a passport or other acceptable ID that you’ll use to create or update your Uphold account.

I am not talking about a bill or something you can indeed get easily through someone else. I have been through a process of several weeks where I had to come personally to governmental desks and police office, to prove my identity and to get a proof of residency. In no way someone else could have done that in my name. Anyway I understand that fraude is a big issue, but yeahh it can be the other way around too, go living in a country where it is not possible but by keeping your passport of the old country you can slip through, So no waterproof, simply the easiest solution.
Will see what the reset of my Brave account does.
It just will put it back like you never had Rewards. Then you’d have to choose your country and try to connect. It then goes through the API to see if the passport you have matches that country and/or if your passport is from a country on the list of supported countries at https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/6539887971469
Yes as expected it keeps the old country so no ads account for me anymore. Maybe in a few years when advanced techniques can be used to identify the place of residency instead of trusting an identitypaper which doesn’t reflect the actual status.
Oh thanks for reminding me, I clicked but did not read it yet so now I did. Well then it hopefully will just be months or weeks before an invite comes. As I have reset my Brave several times I don’t have a long history visible, so probably I’ll be more at the end of the queue.
