Modify repository when updating in browser

Hi,
My company would like to change the repository being used when updating with the web browser.
I want to be able to use my company’s repository, as I’m able to do if I use “apt update brave” in a terminal.

Alternative accepted solution would be to disable the update prompts in the browser.

INFO
OS: Ubuntu 22.04
Brave version: v 1.76.82

Replies would be greatly appreciated!

The usual Brave Sources (over the years) for the Brave Browser updates, installers, components, sync, variations:

  • brave-core-ext.s3.brave.com
  • brave-sync.s3.dualstack.us-west-2.amazonaws.com
  • brave-browser-downloads.s3.brave.com
  • brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com
  • brave-browser-rpm-release.s3.brave.com
  • componentupdater.brave.com
  • go-updater.brave.com
  • go-updater-dev.bravesoftware.com
  • laptop-updates-pre.brave.com
  • laptop-updates.brave.com
  • safebrowsing.brave.com
  • sqs.us-west-2.amazonaws.com
  • updates-cdn.bravesoftware.com
  • updates.bravesoftware.com
  • variations.brave.com

But I am uncertain about other possible BB update sources - for Linux OS users. @Mattches or @fmarier will know much more than I.

My own preference, is that a company’s computer guru(s) adjust(s) their network router’s firewall to allow the necessary sources.

Hi @289wk , thanks you for your quick response!

Clarifying, i want to be able to use my companys repository, which is deemed secure. From what i gather, if i use “apt update brave”, the device goes to my companys repository and updates. Works as intended.

But if i use the browser, and try to update Brave from there. It goes directly to one of Braves repositorys, which doesn’t comply with my companys rules.

So as i mentioned above, i want to be able to edit the web browsers update function to instead point to my companys repository.

@Mattches or @fmarier will know much more than I.

I am guessing, that your company would have to routinely connect with some of the required sources anyway, so that the company repository is up-to-date (functioning as a mirror?). The Brave team members will know exactly which sources your company would use.

How my company ensures that the repository is updated, is out of scope for this task/question.

I just want to be able to alter the repository used when updating via the web browser.

Are you on Linux or Windows/Mac? Because on Linux, updates are done entirely by the operating system (via apt as you point out). There is no “update my browser” inside the browser on that platform.

We are using Linux.
There is a option to “update” in the browser:

Although it does tell me to install a new version when try to do that process.. which is news to me.

Is that a common procedure when updating Brave?

But i’m able to update it via the terminal and APT..

That option is just for restarting the browser after it’s already been updated on your system.

The updates are applied by the OS using the apt repo and then you get a notification in the browser to restart the browser in order to start using the new version that is already installed. If you don’t restart the browser, then you keep using the old version that is no longer installed on your machine but that is still running.

Updating the clients brave browser via a cronjob.

Is there a way to disable the popup/notification?

(FYI: haven’t been able to find any flag about it.)

If you want to turn off updates on Windows, you’ll have to look at a group policy. See these pages for details:

@fmarier
This is a ubuntu 22 VM. I’m only interested in linux solutions.

@peaso

I suggest that you see the info suggested by @fmarier.

At the link that he provided, scroll down the page - re Group Policy.

I’ll have a look and give it a go. I read “windows” and rejected.
I’ll get back to you. Thanks

And you’re seeing that error message there? How out of date is your browser?

I’ve never seen that before on Linux, but I’m never more than a week out-of-date.
