Description
I’ve recently switched from Edge to Brave due to workflow issues I was running into. I made use of Sleeping Tabs in Edge which seems to work differently to Brave. In Edge, tabs will sleep after a defined time, regardless of the amount of system memory free. As far as I understand, Brave will only sleep tabs if a certain percentage of system memory is in use. I found this old post which explains how it worked in 2023, I’m not sure if it still works this way.
As far as I can tell Memory Saver will only kick in if:
Balanced mode - 85% or more of system memory is in usage.
Aggressive mode - 70% or more of system memory is in usage.
Is it possible to force Memory Saver to kick in via a timer, regardless of system memory usage, as it does in Edge? It seems it was possible in 2023 according to the above thread, although I’m not quite sure how to implement it or if it’s still even an option.
The thread refers to:
“start Brave with --enable-features=HeuristicMemorySaver:threshold_percent/90/minimum_minutes_in_background/1”
If not, is this a feature that the developers are willing to implement, perhaps with additional user configuration options?
Steps to reproduce
Enable Memory Saver in Brave settings.
Wait 10 minutes.
Actual result
Tabs will not sleep after a set time of inactivity, unless system memory usage is above 75%.
Desired result
Tabs should sleep after a set time of inactivity, regardless of system memory usage.
Tested on
Brave 1.78.102
Windows 26100.4061
MacOS Sequoia 15.5
