Medium.com publications cause sign out

windows
bug

#1

good day,

When using Medium.com, I’ve noticed a problem where I’m logged out when going into a publication.

Steps to re-create:

  • Sign into Medium.com
  • Once you’re in, you should see your face/icon, etc. in the top right-hand corner.
  • Go to a publication that is hosted by Medium.com (e.g. https://theascent.biz/)
  • Check to see if you’re logged in by looking at the top right-hand corner. It should log you off.
  • Go back to Medium.com and you’ll remain logged off until you log back in again. You’ll be logged out again once you access any of Medium’s publications.

The problem is, much of Medium consists of publications, so you’re logged out frequently. I tried enabling all cookies, but this didn’t seem to help.

I saw a bug logged here, but someone said they could not reproduce it.

Can anyone else reproduce this?

Allowing cookies is certainly a good first shot at troubleshooting. I would recommend this guide : A site is not working / not showing images / not allowing me to log in

I allowed cookies but experience the same behavior.

Here’s how to reproduce:

  • Allow all cookies for Medium.com
  • Allow all cookies for https://themission.co (this is a publication connected to Medium)
  • Sign into Medium.com, you’ll see your profile is active by looking at the top right-hand corner
  • Click on any article on The Mission (Like this one)
  • Click the back button or return to Medium.com
  • You’ll now be signed out of Medium

Let me know if I can provide you with any other info!

Thanks for the heads up and also for the steps to reproduce, @murphy!

I gave the issue on GitHub a +1 and included your steps (since the last comment was that someone could not reproduce)

Thanks
Brian

Thank you very much Brian!

I should note it doesn’t only happen for The Mission, but any other publications too. I can dig up other examples if needed.

Yes I can reproduce.

I’m blocking third (but not first) party cookies.

On an unrelated note, it would be good if you had a Steemit-like way to reward people for contributing on Brave community. I understand the BAT has reserve funds (which were white-hacked and given back recently) that is intended to be used for this, but haven’t personally experienced getting rewards, despite making several contributions.

Once logged in with Medium, the comment system is broken. You have to go shields down for it to work.

PS: be nice to have a shortcut to log the medium version used in a bug report?

I have this problem also.

Medium seems to break Brave. The email method to log into Medium doesn’t work (somewhat infuriating after waiting 10 minutes for the email to arrive). It’s not related to the blog that the OP was trying to read. All blogs that run on the Medium back-end seem equally affected.

It’s the same problem as PayPal. There’s a complicated dance of cookies and JavaScript that takes place. Both the front-end site (the blog) and the back-end site (Medium dot com) must be whitelisted in Brave in order for things to have a chance of working.
