Majority of web sites will not display. Frowny face with black background only

#1

I am using:

Windows 7 PRO

Brave 0.23.39
V8 6.7.288.46
rev 3ee14b0
Muon 7.1.6
OS Release 6.1.7601
Update Channel Release
OS Architecture ia32
OS Platform Microsoft Windows
Node.js 7.9.0
Brave Sync v1.4.2
libchromiumcontent 67.0.3396.103

I often get a blank page (black background) with a frown face when opening a new tab or while browsing Facebook; Lumosity; and many other sites… I have tried reinstalling Flash but when I go to the link that is provided in your FAQ flash will not down load, I get the proper page to download flash for my browser and OS but when I click the download now button nothing happens. This has been going on for a while and has gotten to the point where Brave is practically unusable. It is not just the pages mentioned, it happens on many pages that I try to load. At this point I am lucky if I can get 50% if pages to load… (Imbd will not display, page comes un initially then goes to frowny face)

I too am seeing the frowny face on many websites, since the last couple of releases. This https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N26_(bank) is one example of a page which failed, although it loaded fine when I tried again in another tab. I have all shields up apart from “block scripts” which is switched off.

Hi @efagent, thank you for reaching out to us (you as well @itsBehindYou)!

First, we just released an update yesterday to V0.23.73 - If you’ve updated (make sure you do if not!) do you see the same behavior still?

This is an interesting issue, as I’m unable to reproduce it on Windows 7 on my end. I’m able to navigate to and explore all websites you cited with Shields up (block scripts disabled). You say that this happens about 50% of the time for webpages you visit - are there websites in which this happens 100% of the time (every time you go there, you get the error screen)?

Bonus questions: @itsBehindYou, are you on a Windows 7 machine as well? Do either of you have Hardware Acceleration (Settings --> Advanced) or Strict Site Isolation (Settings --> Security) enabled?

Thanks, I’m using Windows 8.1, with Hardware Acceleration but not Strict Site Isolation. So far, the new version seems good, no frownies. For me at least, the issue was fairly frequent but intermittent, often going away if I opened the site in another tab.

The new release seems to have fixed the “frowny face” issue but I now find that Brave crashes continually…

Glad to hear the issue was fixed and apologize for the new one! :stuck_out_tongue:

We currently have a thread going for the browser crash error here: Browser crashing

If you leave a reply on that thread with your crash IDs (type chrome://crashes it’ll help us pinpoint the issue.

There’s also a Github issue opened for the error here if you’d like to track progress on the issue:
https://github.com/brave/browser-laptop/issues/14955

Thank you!
