Macbook CPU use 140% with Brave - no usual fixes work

Description of the issue:

About a week ago my Macbook Pro 2019 (Intel T2) started overheating and it’s battery life dropped from lasting about 4 hours to under 1 hour. When using CleanMyMac to diagnose it Brave was using up to 140% CPU! It spikes constantly and rarely sits below 10%.

I have tried all of the usual online advice from forums and online (hardware accelerator, extensions etc…) and none of it works. I have not installed any new extensions either in this time.

I did have about an hour of success when resetting the Mac’s SMC manually. However it then started overheating again with Brave using way too much CPU so that is not the issue.

It seems that it may be linked to YouTube videos but even when Youtube is not open it runs hot

I will link a task manager and CleanMyMac screenshot below

How can this issue be reproduced?
Using Brave

Brave Version
Version 1.78.97 Chromium: 136.0.7103.93 (Official Build) (x86_64)

Additional Information
This now means I can not use my laptop as a laptop because it drains so fast and runs hot I am worried it will damage the battery. Also, when plugged in and in use the batter does not charge because the computer is drawing so much energy, it simply runs off of the charger cable power.

Please help - thank you

The posted task manager screenshot seems fine here, just to be clear is HW Acceleration enabled?

Thank you for the reply!

On my version i do not see a hardware acceleration option. I go to settings, system and then see ‘Use graphics acceleration when available’ - this option is off.

When using the searchbar to search for HW acceleration nothing comes up

Update: I have reset the SMC again and the computer was working fine until I used Brave to open up YouTube. Then it went back into overheating and the battery draining super fast.

So I think that YouTube may be the problem. How do i stop it from causing this bug?

Enable Hardware Acceleration in this; brave://settings/system

Accelerated video works better with this enabled.

Thanks again for the reply. This is what I see when i copy and paste your link. Do you think graphics acceleration is the same?

Also, just used Safari browser with YouTube and my computer didnt go into overdrive mode. So it is definately a Brave and YouTube issue only

This worked, which is weird because the problem started when it was already on so i turned it off.
Thanks for the help!

Scratch that. It worked for about 2 hours and now it is doing the same thing again. Still triggered by Brave. Someone please help.

This exact same thing is happening to me, MBP 2019 Intel T2. I’m almost certain it’s YouTube causing the problem somehow. Brave somehow doesn’t seem well optimised for Mac, I’ve switched back to Google Chrome for the moment.

Some of us have chatted separately about this. There’s a task in Brave called something like Brave Content Helper (rendering) that, when called runs the CPU up over 100%. I’v seen it with any video, even ones embedded in a newsfeed webpage. In YouTube, Brave does a great job of suppressing the ads, and maybe this is the price. I’ve gone back to Safari, and turned off “autoplay” for all websites. Idle state now running 97 - 99% most of the time. The Brave issue seems to have come up after the most recent update.
