Logged in today tried to open Brave it flashes on screen than closes

Turned on desktop today and went to open Brave. Hit icon on taskbar nothing happened. Went to icon on desktop and used Run As Admin. Start screens popped up and got want program to make changes to system. Answered Yes. It flashed on screen and then close instantly. Opened task manager and tried to load again. Shows only BraveSoftware Update and update (32bit) running. Looked to see if a crash file was available and there was none. Downloaded Update from Brave Website and ran, results the same. Deleted app and reinstalled same issues. Ran fine before shutting down this morning at 3:00 AM CST. Have AMD 5800xt and AMD RX 6800 XT. Downloaded new drivers for GPU same result. Mother Board: B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC (MS-7B85).

Running Windows 10 Pro Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045 with 32 GB of memory no TMP board installed.

Looking initially this seems like a Graphics Acceleration issue. First, can you try launching Task Manager and simply ensuring that every Brave process is fully closed (including updater and/or helper processes), then try launching again and see if it makes any difference?

If it does not, lets try disabling Graphics Acceleration:

  1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut for Brave – click Properties
  2. Click into the Target field
  3. Type --disable-gpu at the end of the path. Note that you must type this outside of the quotes with a space between the flag and quotes
  4. Click Apply then OK
  5. Launch the browser

If nether of the suggestions above make any difference, can you please try downloading the Beta build of the browser and test to see if the Beta shows the same behavior or if it launches normally (note that the Beta will install separately and can be deleted after testing if desired – your current stable install will not be affected).

OK only the Beta works. Shut the system down last night and this morning couldn’t get Brave to run. Will go to beta. I was able to get STABLE to run yesterday with it flashing twice and running but not today! Also Micro***t installed an update and Task Manager has a totally new look today. I tried the --disable-gpu but it didn’t work.

@OldeBuick you’re welcome to use the Beta build if you’d like. However, if you’re willing to start fresh, you may want to try first just un/reinstalling the stable browser to see if that helps.

Note that when you go to uninstall the browser in Add or Remove programs in Windows, you’ll be shown a prompt asking whether you want to delete any browser data as well. I would recommend first not checking that box (so that your browser data is retained), uninstalling the browser, then install it again and test to see if the issue persists.

If this does work, then you won’t lose any of the data in your browser when you reinstall. If it does not work – that is, the same screen flashing/closing occurs, then I would try un/reinstalling again, but this time electing to delete the associated browser data as well.
