Leo, the AI, can't do trigonometry

I just went through a complex interaction with Leo, Brave’s AI. Basically, it can’t do the calculation of trigonometry to calculate the sides of a right triangle.

I told it that A, the short leg, is 925 km long, and the angles are 82.8 degrees (and the other is 90, of course), and I asked it to determine the length of the other sides (B and C). For some reason, it used the angles as the length of the sides in one mistake, in another, it used the two sides as 925 km as an isosceles right triangle. But, it never successfully calculated the length of B and C.

@Procnias,
Which AI model were you using?

Looks like the math might be slightly off? I wonder if it’s rounding weirdly but it got pretty close to the answer that omi-calc got me:

DOn’t you see that that answer is wrong. The short side is 925, and the AI said it’s 114.1 and the hypotenuse is 932.3 - that is WAY wrong.

@Procnias I’m sure @Mattches and others are looking into it, but I do want to take a moment to reply to mention that AI in general still seems to be struggling with math. If you ever go through places like r/chatgpt or other groups on websites, you’ll see this is a discussion that has come up fairly often.

I actually was using ChatGPT the other day and it messed up an equation such as below:

image

  • 90 minutes per hour
  • 36 hours per day

Doesn’t make sense, does it? Even the idea of it saying 3 cycles per hour but then saying 30 minutes per cycle…doesn’t compute.
