If I want to add a language for spell-checking, I have to add the language to my “Let websites know the languages that you speak” configuration. I may not want to do that, because it may expose me to targeted advertising, alternative pricing and more. Political dissidents especially might not want to advertise the languages they speak.
When I try to enable the spell-checking, I can’t add spell-checking without broadcasting my languages.
I am trying to enable it, not because I really want spell-checking (I know how to spell), more because it lights up like a Christmas tree if I write in a different language.
Of course, now I realise I can just disable spell-checking, but really, the setting shouldn’t expose my data by default.
FEATURE WISH:
- Allow me to add a language, but not request it from sites.
Two alternative features could help my situation: make spell-checking less intrusive either by:
- make spelling error annotation much more subtle
- temporarily turn off spell-checking if 5-10 words in a row are spelled “wrong”.
