Just Updated Windows 11 to 24H2; now Brave has significant performance issues that it didn't have before

Just this morning, Windows 11 got a “Feature Update” to 24H2.

Now, Brave seems to be having significant performance issues most visibly to updating the display.  Screens that updated instantaneously before the 24H2 update now often take several seconds or dozens of seconds to fully update, usually updating parts of the display, but not others until after a significant delay.

I have, so far, not observed any similar behavior in any other of several programs that I use regularly, just under Brave.

I’m running Brave Version 1.73.104 Chromium: 131.0.6778.204 (Official Build) (64-bit) on a very modern PC, under Windows 11.

Attached is a DxDiag.txt file describing my system in detail.

DxDiag.txt (125.4 KB)

Based on your system configuration, everything I’m about to say here should not matter, because you’re not on one of the ARM-based “CoPilot PCs”, or whatever Microsoft is calling them these days.

That said, 24H2 has a feature called “Recall”, which is very intrusive and tracks just about everything you do on your machine. Allegedly, this feature is not enabled on a 24H2 installation, but there seem to be exceptions.

You might benefit from having a look at this Chris Titus video explaining the situation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00wdDITpfXU because it’s possible that, even though Recall is not supposed to be active by default, it’s worth verifying that it’s not running.

Best of luck.

Update 24H2 is a nightmare, all chrome based browsers crash as soon as I type. Uninstalled straight away. Reported to MS, 1st rep said I had to do fresh install, I told him whrer to shove that.
@nd rep said they know about it, but no answer as to when it will be fixed or why they are still sending the update out.
Where is that windows 10 disc?

Turning off hardware acceleration, according to the instructions found here, seems to have solved most of the problems that I had been having with Brave since the 24H2 update to Windows 11.

On doing a bit of Googling, I found how to determine whether “Recall” was enabled on my machine, and determined that it is not.

For good measure, just to be sure it stays that way, I found this command, which I have added to a couple of batch files that I routinely run, just so that every time I use of of those batches for purposes having nothing to do with it, it makes sure that “Recall” remains disabled.

OK, so not quite a great solution after all.

It gets down to the Use graphics acceleration when available setting under brave://settings/system

If I disable this, then everything works just fine, except that there are some sites with complex displays that slow waaaaaay down.  The one site that I can specifically give as an example, from the top of my head, is https://webmap.onxmaps.com/offroad/map   Unfortunately, you need to be a paid member to see it.  It draws a very complex map, and allows you to scroll and zoom through that map.  With hardware acceleration turned off via the aforementioned setting, it is annoyingly slow to respond and update; it performs much, much better with hardware acceleration turned on. But with hardware acceleration turned on, I get all sorts of display update and performance issues with many other sites.

I wish there was a way to selectively enable and disable hardware acceleration on a site-by-site basis.  Or better yet, for this bug to be fixed, so that hardware acceleration works correctly on all sites.
