Is there an option to modify the default screen color in Incognito Mode?

BRAVE Dev’s ‘appearance’ setting appears to affect only standard windows. It has no effect on Incognito windows (none that I’ve found to date anyway).

I prefer a lighter look than the Incognito windows default, which I would describe as not merely ‘dark’ but ‘really dark.’

In its current form some page elements at the top of the screen are even hard to make out.

Any option(s) regarding this I’ve missed?

Thanks.

I think there’s something to be said about the private window remaining a separate theme then that of standard windows. By doing this, you make the distinction between which of these windows you’re using, which helps prevent you from accidentally doing private stuff in a non private window. Subtle, but worth mentioning.

Having said that, I do think that there should be some level of customization/optimization for private tabs. I opened an issue in our Brave-browser repo (this is our brave-core/1.0 repo) for the team to look over and discuss . I included your post in the issue as well:

I didn’t mean to suggest there should be no difference in appearance between standard & incognito windows (there definitely should), just that the particular choice that currently is the sole option – dark black that’s really dark – shouldn’t be the only option.

Any theme that distinguishes incognito from standard tabs should work. I also find ‘dark’ themes (of any color) hard on the eyes.

Thanks for opening an issue about this.

Two specific issues in Incognito Mode (in BRAVE Dev) that are relevant to the topic:

  1. Tabs don’t appear separate from one another.

  2. Text (titles/labels) in tabs other than the selected one are a shade of grey that blends so much into the black background that the titles appear very pale & indistinct.

I’ve found that display colors render differently on different platforms & even in different operating system versions, so to see the above as I see it it may be necessary to run in Incognito mode on a Mac in High Sierra.

Would you mind sending a couple screenshots of the areas you’re describing?

This screenshot should show both, let’s see how it renders when it posts. (Grab your magnifying glass just in case.)

This above shows most accurately how the tab ‘titles’ in the tabs that lack focus actually appear.

Unbelievably this is still a problem. I find it very stressful not having a clear demarcation between tabs. With each update I hold my breath hoping this has been dealt with. Today it was 101.1.38.115 MacOS. Sadly the problem is still there.

I feel like I must be only one using private browser mode…

And so here we are at V1.38.119 and still the crappy purple on black forced them… Tried vivaldi. I liked it and they do have a themes in private mode. However it crashes too often so back to Brave and purple on black :frowning:

I wish these guys would focus on the browser itself more than the crypto nonsense.

Hey guys, just chiming in from mid 2023. Any option to change the active tab color in private browsing? I don’t even care if I get to pick the color. I just want a super obvious contrast setting I can turn on, or hell, make it default for everyone! I also am finding myself accidentally closing tabs (that I can’t reopen, because private mode) enough that it’s annoyed me to the point to write this long post. Kinda tired of squinting my eyes and getting reallly close to the screen to make sure I’m closing the right tab.

For Windows users, just a heads up - you can close the currently active tab by pressing CTRL + F4. I’d still like to have better contrast though. Sometimes I close tabs that aren’t active.

I went to https://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/ to check the contrast. The recommended contrast ratio for graphic UI elements is at least 3:1. For the black and purple of the tabs, it’s only 1.3:1. That’s a pretty strong objective indication something should probably change.
