Is there a Brave apk that will work on Android 6?

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:
Would love to be able to run Brave on my tablet which is maxed out at Android 6. Is there an apk or such that is still available?
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Own or obtain an Android device that can only run Android 6.
  2. Open Google Play Store, locate Brave Browser.
  3. See if you can install it. Duh!

Expected result:
Joy at finally having Brave Browser on device.
Brave Version( check About Brave):
N/A
Mobile Device details
Lenovo Tab 10 A2 or something like that. It’s old, only runs Android 6
Additional Information:
I don’t mind running otherwise unsupported software!

@Durhammer It would be greatly outdated and be missing a lot of features. Even some things on Shields wouldn’t be able to work 100% as it will be missing capabilities for new rules. Also due to older it might have more vulnerabilities.

But if you’re fine with that, you can always go to the Github to grab older versions. I’m not 100% sure which version was last available.

Going through release notes, I see https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.46.146 had a fix for an issue on Android 6.

And judging by My device is not compatible with this update which was posted a month later, Android 6 was no longer getting updates.

Then can see person talking of issues in the 1.45-1.46 timeframe for Android 6 at Android 6+ APKs that are 108. Chromium doesn't work

So I guess would tell you to start with 1.46.146 as I originally linked and if that doesn’t work, you may need to poke around.

Thanks, @Saoiray !!! I’m actually embarrassed that I didn’t think to poke around on GitHub (I do have an account). That release works for the most part, looks great. I can’t seem to get Brave News to work, can’t add my own RSS feeds (which the latest desktop version doesn’t seem to support either), nor can I open a link from a third party app (RSS feed reader) via its “share” function. But this is still so much better than FFX and CHRM so far. I can fiddle with the shields directly, whereas with FFX and the ADG ext’n loaded, it is a real PITA to do any simple on-the-fly tweaking. Thanks for the great help!

Oh yeah – is it possible that even later releases might still work, at least as well as this one?

Sure it does. I’m too lazy to go through the details but I’ll link you to two separate conversations. They should give you a clue on it. I’m not sure about how it was back on Android 6 or mobile now, but at least know about Desktop.

It’s possible. I wasn’t able to find anything official that talked about when Android 6 Lost it support. I only know that it was about the timeframe and with the versions that I linked you to. I’m responding from my phone so don’t feel like looking back to what I had linked but I know they talked about a chromium version and all that stuff. So if you wanna dive deeper and test other things you may get something slightly newer that could work. But it’s likely going to be somewhere in the 1.46 or the 1.47 range at the latest. I would be very surprised if you can get like 1.48 or newer to load on your Android 6.

Thanks again! I actually did figure it out on the desktop (duh – never bothered to click on the three bar/hamburger icon before). It’s a bit more kludgy than doing an easy RSS OPML file import, but it does work, site by site. SUPER! I can use Brave News instead of my other RSS news reader app.

The 'droid version, however, never lets you do anythinowg with the RSS feed URL. It shows a “Search” icon/widget when you enter something, but it doesn’t seem to do anything. Enabling Brave News with the defaults doesn’t do anything, either. But I’ll keep poking at it. Not a deal-breaker. I’ve been using Only RSS (or RSS Only, or whatever it is), which is nice, but when I use it to try to open an article on the Brave browser via the “Share” function, it simply doesn’t work. FFX works using the RSS “share” function, but I’d like to move away from that and reclaim its space. Sharing copy to clipboard and then opening with Brave works, but of course that’s kludgy. Thanks again!

Brave News, especially since I now know I can add my own RSS feeds, is simply great. WAY better than Gargle Gnus or RSS news readers alone. The only (?) problem with it is addiction. I know I can stop at any time. I know I can. At least, I think I can…

I got the last “Bravearm.apk” Release (I think – not pre-release, beta, etc.) installed at v1.46.154 . Unfortunately, it does not respond well to third party apps (Just RSS in one case) using a “Share” icon; Brave just sees the title with %20 characters substituted in the title string, almost as a search string, and Brave rejects the “URL” (“site can’t be reached”). FFX has no problem with it. Sigh. Also, while “Brave News” is appaarently stubbed into the three-dot menu, it simply doesn’t work. So sad, but at least I have a (hopefully) stable release. For the record, in case I need to go back a bit, I also downloaded APK’s for v1.45.131/133, and v1.46.138/146 . Somewhere I had seen that there SHOULD BE APK’s for Android 5 and 6 as “BraveModernarm.apk” but I simply could not find any that were for a higher release. I don’t really know how to search in GitHub for assets by name. Sigh. But in the end, I still do have at least the last (?) version that was released for Android 6 (though my source says the “Bravearm.apk” packa).ges were for Android 4.4 and above
