IPFS Cycles Network Printer Power [was Update Brave Nightly Cycles Network Printer Power]

Update 4: Either I had IPFS configured wrong or Nightly 1.33.34 just started doing this on Windows 10, so now it’s a cross-platform issue. See IPFS Cycles Network Printer Power [was Update Brave Nightly Cycles Network Printer Power] - #16 by hnktong I’ll have to retest with Linux, too, to be sure. Sigh.

Update 3: I tested with Brave Dev, Beta, and Release. Only Nightly with IPFS set to local node cycles the printer.

Update 2: Printer resets when IPFS is set to local node. When set to Gateway, it doesn’t appear to do it. Also, I didn’t realize Release and Beta had IPFS, so I’ve downloaded them and will test them.

Update: After originally posting this I tried other Chromium-based browsers on Windows 10 and macOS 10.14. and 11. Brave Nightly is the only one that cycles the printer, and it can be done simply by disabling IPFS, waiting a bit, then re-enabling it The update process must do something similar behind the scenes or effectively does it so it seemed like it was updating that did it. But it’s definitely IPFS-related.

Description of Issue:

Printer cycles when updating Nightly or when disabling then re-enabling IPFS.

How to reproduce:

Update Brave Nightly or disable IPFS and re-enable IPFS.
Brave Nightly 1.33.7 through 1.33.25 on macOS 10.14.6 have done it, and some earlier versions before I originally posted. Also occurs on macOS 11.6 with Nightly 1.33.7 through 1.33.20 or so.

Original post:

I’ve been seeing this for a few days, now, did a search of the Community with no similar result. At first I thought it was power fluctuations, but amazingly, no, the timing suggests it’s really from updating Brave.

Description of the issue:

When I update Brave Nightly, my network printer cycles on relaunch of Brave. This happens on Yosemite and Big Sur and may be tied to being on WiFi. Both Macs are connected via Ethernet and WiFi. I’ve observed this quite a few times, now, and I don’t think it occurred with Release when I installed it this morning, but when I relaunched Nightly, it did it again just now. I’ve not encountered the issue on Windows, yet, but my Windows machine isn’t on WiFi (I’ll connect that way next update). I’ve also not observed it with Chrome or Chromium, yet. When I get a chunk of time, I’ll download some older releases and make them update with WiFi on/off to see what happens.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. When update notification arrives, click update
  2. Click Relaunch/Install Update
  3. After update is applied, Brave relaunches, if Profile Manager appears, select Profile
  4. Printer cycles power and says it was turned off wrong
  5. Printer won’t respond to jobs until restarted via power button

Expected result:

Update proceeds without restarting the printer.

Update edit:

It occurred to me a few minutes after posting that information about the printer might help. The printer reports this:
image

And the Macs report this:
2012 13" MBP Mojave: image

2015 13" MBA Big Sur: image

I’ve no idea why the more recent OS has a purportedly older driver unless Canon has different versioning for 32/64 bit or different OS versions?

Second update:

A Nightly update popped up on the Air/Big Sur while I was adding the printer information. Upon launching the updated browser, yes, it did it again. Note that it’s not immediate; it takes a minute or so after the new tab/window appears before the cycling occurs.

Sure enough, I just updated Brave Nightly on my MBP from 1.33.7 to 1.33.10 and the printer rebooted and shows a scolding message that the power wasn’t shut off correctly. I did the same on Windows after connecting to WiFi and nothing happened. So it seems to be a Brave NIghtly + macOS issue, and I’m going to guess something to do with Bonjour/AirPrint. @Mattches, does that sound like a possibility?

If I have time, I’ll do the experimentation with WiFi this weekend. Also, I’ll try turning Bonjour off on the printer to see if that stops it.

@hnktong,
Apologies for the late reply here. That is…very strange behavior and my guess would be the same as yours – something to do with Bonjour/AirPrint. I’ve informed the team of this and will let you know when I have a reply.

In the interim, I’m wondering if you have Brave Nightly set to use the printer in question here by default (Cmd + p --> Destination)? If so, do you get the same results if you change this destination to something else (just set to Save as PDF if you only have the one printer)?

Hi, @Mattches. No worries on the delay; this isn’t a critical thing, just weird and annoying.

When I select Print, I get the Save as PDF option (I think that’s the default I have set).

We only have the one printer set up, though we have another gifted to our daughter NIB. The Canon is pretty long in the teeth, now, so maybe its implementation of Bonjour/AirPrint is outdated. Still, that’s really for advertising its presence and services, isn’t it?

@hnktong,
I’ll ping macOS team again today and see if they can shed some light here.

Thank you, @Mattches. I took my laptop to a different site yesterday and when I got home, launched Brave, and selected a profile, it reset the printer, again. I’m pretty sure Nightly updated while I was out, so no big surprise, but I think I’ll experiment and see if just switching networks will do it, too. I’m about to do an update and will follow up if the reset doesn’t occur this time.

Note: It doesn’t matter which profile I choose, and it doesn’t matter if I turn off launching into Profile Manager; the printer reset happens in all instances if I launch Brave after there’s been an update.

I’m keeping a log of browser versions and whether they reset the printer for Chromium, Google Chrome (Release, Beta, Canary), and Opera (Release, Beta, Dev), in addition to Brave Nightly. So far only Brave does it, so it’s probably not in the Chromium source.

@Mattches - it’s IPFS
It occurred to me that the one thing I’m pretty sure the other Chromium-based browsers don’t do is IPFS.
I disabled the IPFS Companion extension and turned off IPFS in 1.33.24’s settings, quit 1.33.24, downloaded 1.33.25 dmg, copied to Applications, and launched Nightly.
No printer reset occurred after the amount of time it usually takes.
I then enabled the IPFS extension, waited a bit - no reset
I then enabled IPFS in the settings, and the printer cycled shortly after that.

Edit: After posting this, I tried disabling and re-enabling IPFS, and the printer cycled, so it’s not the extension, but the IPFS code doing it.

So the question is, what is IPFS doing on the network to trigger that power cycle in the printer?

I think I have a tool that will monitor network traffic - wireshark or something - would that help?

@Mattches I loaded up WireShark and PacketPeeper. I have a few captures of network traffic immediately before the printer cycles, and it definitely skyrockets while IPFS launches. Just what the captures say is not in my ken.

@Mattches, I will try to create a ticket on the dev site. It’s been a while since I’ve done it, but I’m sure I can figure it out. I know my printer is old and maybe newer devices aren’t affected, but it doesn’t seem like IPFS should be able to cycle the printer power like that. It makes me wonder what else could be affected negatively by whatever IPFS is doing to trigger it in the first place.

I have a theory that the printer might just be overloaded by network traffic spiking during IPFS launch, but I don’t think that holds water since there are times when we have three streaming devices going and the printer is just fine. Plus, it usually only happens when enabling IPFS after it’s been disabled, as opposed to simply relaunching Brave after quitting.

I downloaded Dev, Beta, and Release - none of them reset the printer on any combination of IPFS settings I tried. It seems there’s something about version 1.33.x that changed IPFS behavior. Working on that ticket, now.

Linux Lite:

Here is a crude log of my exploits not including the Linux Lite test above. Initially I tracked Brave Nightly on two machines, then when I expanded testing to Chromium (then-latest build via https://download-chromium.appspot.com/) and the different channels of Chrome and Opera, I focused on my daily workhorse, the 2012 MBP running macOS 10.14. Once IPFS was suspect and I learned that IPFS was in Dev, Beta, and Release, I abandoned the other browsers. This is why the log has empty spaces. That and I wanted to minimize time spent on this without slacking too much and I don’t do this for a living, so please be gentle in any critique of the log.

Printer Reset? Yes - when enabled IPFS local node
However, yesterday’s resets apparently borked the printer to the point where it wouldn’t respond or shut down, so while initially the printer did not reset, that’s only because it was so messed up. Once I hard reset it and enabled IPFS to local node, it cycled as with previous versions.
