iOS playlist no longer plays/downloads Rumble videos

,

I’ve been using Brave browser with playlists on iOS for a long while now to listen to podcasts offline, downloaded from Rumble.

For the past few days I can’t add videos from Rumble to my playlist.

Up until now I had to use this hack where I play the video for about 5 seconds, long-press the video itself and click “add to playlist” (I don’t remember the exact text there), but that’s not the issue, just extra information.

Lately though, it seems that it doesn’t matter what I do, whether I add a “normal” Rumble video or a livestream or whether I wait the 5 seconds, I get this broken video in the playlist that only gives an error message of “There was a problem loading the resource” when I try playing it, and needless to say - Brave doesn’t download the video for offline viewing.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. On the iOS app, go to any Rumble video, e.g. https://rumble.com/v6rnv3p-11-bitcoin-wisdoms-to-tattoo-on-your-face.-one-youve-never-heard-before-ep..html?e9s=src_v1_crypto (completely random video for the sake of reproducing, don’t read anything into the content).
  2. Play the video, let it play for 5 seconds and then long press the video, click “Add to Brave Playlist”
  3. Go to your playlist, observe that the video isn’t downloaded for offline (assuming you have the feature turned on), and also you can’t play it.

Expected result:
Video should be able to play and be downloaded offline.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.76 (77)

Mobile Device details
iPhone 13 Pro, iOS 18.3.2

Additional Information:
The breaking change could’ve either been on Brave’s side or on Rumble’s side, changing something (on purpose or not) in how they serve videos on their site.
Without debugging the code (which I can’t do because I don’t have a Mac) I can’t really tell.

@avrahams1 I think I’m seeing what’s going on to an extent. Do me a favor and test to see if the same happens to you. I just went to the video you shared and after having issues, decided to turn off Shields.

In doing so, it played ads. Then when the actual video played, I added to playlist. When I checked Playlist it shows as if the video is there, but it was only 0:30 and the picture wasn’t right. What it saved was an advertisement that appeared before the main video.

If I have Shields on and try to save to playlist, I get the message Sorry. There was a problem loading the resource! And it will sometimes still show an image from what would have been the ad instead of the actual video

So I’m guessing the issue is Shields is preventing the ad and therefore there’s no cache to grab, which means it can’t be saved on Playlist. When we have Shields off, it caches and can be saved. But it’s only grabbing that first video of an ad rather than the content.

Not sure what would need to be adjusted. But I suppose having you test and affirm it’s not just me at least may narrow down the issue. Then it’s just seeing how long until team from Brave can resolve.

Just to show, this is what happened when I tried doing it with Shields enabled:

First, thank you for looking into this.
I tested with Brave Shield off, I get ads.
If I then use the save button to the right of the URL at the bottom I get (as you said) the ad downloaded instead of the video. (even if I wait for the ads to finish and for the video to play)
If I use the old “trick” of getting videos from Rumble - let the video play for 5 seconds, long-press it and click “Add to playlist”, I get the same original issue, which is some corrupted link that gives the “Problem loading resource” error.

OK, a somewhat weird update here:
A week and a half later, the issue vanished as mysteriously as it came.
I can now add videos from Rumble to my playlist just as I could a week and a half ago, without doing anything on my part.

My best guess is some weird hiccup on Rumble’s part, possible a bug they introduced and fixed.

Either way, thanks to everyone here!
