Are the developers even working on this? Or care? This has been happening since my child was born last year.

Yep - auto-contribute doesn’t seem to work on any platform where I have brave installed.
Thanks for reporting in @CyborgArchitect - we put out a new release (0.63.x) today and it had a fix that will hopefully resolve this issue in all cases (https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/issues/3897).
