You were able to show/hide it by enabling/disabling #tab-search flag, but then they removed it. You can’t hide it anymore, but that isn’t really annoying
You can’t hide the search tabs feature as of the moment. There is an open Github report that aims to introduce an option to hide the feature.

Chrome has removed this flag in Chromium v91.0.4472.77. Some of our users lean more towards "minimalists" and would prefer the option to hide/disable this option if possible.
