Description of the issue:
A few months ago, a web address ( briefext.com ) that tried to load from a random redirect, was blocked by my avast antivirus as malicious. However, every time I do a fresh opening of the browser an extra tab opens and attempts to load the website “briefext.com”. Initially, the address url would show that site but the page would be blank. I eventually, added that site to my Block Site list however the extra tab is still starting up as the Block Site ext. blocks it and keeps the url from showing up in the address bar
How can this issue be reproduced?
consistently occurs at fresh opening of the brave browser.
Expected result:
Hoping to find solution to remove the briefext.com loading action from a root cause, permanently stop the loading attempt.

This is probably caused by an virus or an extension. To see if it’s a virus, create a new profile (Ctrl+Shift+M, “add”) and see if you have the same issue there. To see if it’s an extension, disable your extensions in brave://extensions/ and restart the browser. Enable the extensions one-by-one until you find the culprit, then uninstall it.
Thank you for the response. After my post, I performed updates to my system and antivirus. The problem vanished. When I opened Brave it behaved as desired as I made a few attempts to see if the problem occurred and it did not. Then I read your suggestions and tried the profile one, and no issue there either. So it looks like an update took care of it for me. Odd because I have done numerous updates since the begging and none of the earlier ones fixed it. I will keep you suggestions in mind for next time.
