How to disable "Word Reference"

Description of the issue:
When I am on websites that are not in English (i.e. French) there is a popup window from “Word Reference” that appears every time I highlight some words. This is really annoying and I have looked at the settings to find how to disable it, but I cannot find anything.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

  1. Go on to a website in a foreign language. I used French.
  2. Highlight words with your mouse.
  3. Look at the popup that appears automatically.
  4. Ask forum for help.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):

Expected result:
I want nothing to happen. Just have the words become highlighted.

Reproduces how often:
Everytime

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
OS: macOS Sierra v 10.12.6
Brave: v 1.9.72
Additional Information:
Please help. I’m going insane.

Hi @slc30, thanks for reaching out!
Can you try creating a new test profile and seeing if the issue persists?
Click on the menu icon in the top right corner > create a new profile.

Hi @Aa-ron thank you for your reply.

I created a new profile and unfortunately the problem still persists.

Can you on confirm this happens on multiple sites and not just the one? Can you share the URL or those sites so we can test?

Oh jeez…haha I see now that it is actually just that website that does it. It does it even for English words. This is the site: https://www.tolearnfrench.com/
I have gone onto other websites in French and it isn’t doing that…sorry facepalm

I have only been using Brave for about a week and I guess I was just so sucked in by my frustration that I didn’t think it might just be the website and not the new browser.

Thank you for your help! The browser is great!
