How do you turn off autocomplete search suggestions in the address bar?

I want to turn off search suggestions in the address bar but without turning off suggestions for Browsing History / Bookmarks etc

In the brave://settings/appearance deselecting the subsections doesn’t work and only switching off Show autocomplete suggestions in address bar works but this also turns off the suggestions for Bookmarks / History etc which I want to retain

This thread says there’s an option under brave://settings/search

but I can’t see it anywhere so I don’t know if it’s been recently removed or something ?

You are correct that the thread you mentioned suggests an option under brave://settings/search. However, as of the current version of Brave, there is no granular setting within brave://settings/search that allows you to disable search suggestions in the address bar while keeping suggestions for browsing history and bookmarks. The options available under brave://settings/search primarily relate to:

Default Search Engine: Choosing which search engine is used for address bar searches.
Improve search suggestions: This setting generally controls whether search terms are sent to your default search engine to get better suggestions. It doesn’t specifically differentiate between web search suggestions and local history/bookmark suggestions.

Chrome added shortcuts, to easily search for tabs, bookmarks, and history from the URL address bar:

Yes they work but they require extra steps / are less intuitive

Before I could just type a single letter and the top results would be my Top Sites / History / Bookmarks

Now instead I get some irrelevant ‘trending’ queries at the top of my results

According to the thread I linked to this feature was still available as recently as Feb so I don’t understand why it’s been removed now ?
