@noelen,
Not sure what you’re asking here. Tabs are easily distinguishable — are you having trouble seeing active tabs?
Light theme:
Dark theme:
Active tabs are highlighted and given depth to put them in focus. Inactive tabs use separators:
@mattches In a Private window on my MacBook Pro tabs are reasonably distinguishable until the tab bar fills up and the tab with focus gets squished, which also tends to attenuate its brightness.
I use a non-bright screen, but even when I increase the brightness there is no discernible three-dimensional emphasis in the tab with focus in a Private window. With greatly increased brightness I can see a rectangular border around the text in the tab but it’s too close in color to the black background to have any three-dimentional effect.
Closing the wrong tab (again, when the tab bar is packed) isn’t a rare event, so I think this is something that could be improved if enough other users have similar experience.
I also believe there is a lack of standardization (and therefore of uniformity) in the screen appearance of colors even from one model of a computer to another. When I switched from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro the colors in e,g. document tables created on the MacBook appeared significantly different on the MacBookPro.
@mk7z could you show a screenshot or two as examples where you say it’s difficult to distinguish?
I think they go by your individual settings on OS. But then people can make adjustments, I think. It’s been a while since I’ve paid close attention but I do remember being able to choose color themes. Are you using the same theme on both devices?
(Pardon me if wrong on that. I’m responding from my iPhone and don’t have desktop on, so going from memory here rather than testing/experimenting first as I usually do)
@mk7z,
As @Saoiray asks, a screenshot of what you’re seeing would go a very long way towards helping us understand what you’re experiencing. Here is what I see on my Macbook Pro:
Even with all of these tabs open, it seems very clear to me which tab has focus on the strip. Here is another view, with the window on my Macbook itself (the above image is a secondary monitor):
It is still quite clear which tab has the focus. Further, and while I don’t mean to invalidate your issue here, it should be expected that if you have tons and tons of tabs open, they’re going to compress in order to fit on the screen and the ease at which you can view/discern individual tabs will get harder.
Please share a screenshot of what you’re seeing on your end so we can get a better idea of the issue.
Thanks, @mattches

Right, that wasn’t a complaint, I just meant to note the factors that can at times make immediate recognition of the tab with focus challenging. The others being the attenuated contrast in low screen brightness (which as I noted I favor) and differences in color rendering on different computer models (e.g., older MacBook v. newer MacBook Pro)
In the screenshot below, if you imagine all the New Tab tabs replaced by icons such as those on the left, which is more accurate in terms of the lack of contrast of the tab with focus in actual usage than a row of New Tab tabs, the tab with focus doesn’t exactly stand out from the crowd.
Thanks @Saoiray, please see my reply to Mattches.
I’m not using two devices, was just recalling that colors as they appeared on my MacBook (on which the colored items, such as table rows, were created) appeared differently when I upgraded to a MacBook Pro – i.e., when I opened the same doc, etc. that had been created on the MacBook on the MacBook Pro.
I’m not aware of global control of colors. The apps I use tend to have their own native color controls and I find that for the most part the colors don’t appear the same when transferred to other apps.
At times the issue is more that the tabs other than the tab with focus are barely readable. (Example below.)
The same happens with text in the URL line. I frequently have to click in the URL line in order to brighten the text to make it readable. The brightness level of the rest of the screen is quite normal.
Note that enlarging the screenshot image produces a brighter appearance than the one I actually see on-screen. That was one of the things I alluded to in prior posts here. In the enlargement, the text in the ‘other tabs’ (the ones without focus) isn’t hard to read. But that’s not the ‘real’ view – i.e., the way the text actually looks on-screen. In the ‘real’ view only the tab with focus (the one on the far right) is clear. The text in the other tabs is very dim.

Perhaps a short screen recording would be a more accurate representation?
@mattches, re: ‘short screen recording’, do you mean to show the difference in brightness between the actual tab bar as viewed by the user (i.e., me) vs. how it appears when a screenshot of same (i.e., the tab bar) is viewed after being enlarged by clicking on the screenshot in the forum post?
I ask because there is no animation involved. The three elements are all static:
– tab bar
– screenshot of tab bar
– screenshot of tab bar enlarged by clicking on it (in message post)
Thanks.
