Apparently, Brave only allows themes to be downloaded from the Google Chrome store which, as many who come to Brave are trying to “de-Google” their lives, seems crazy. That said, I installed a theme on my Brave browser but now that I try to see what information that theme entitles Google and the creator to on my browser and browsing history I can’t find any way to do it but to log in to a Google account?
Is it correct that I have to create a separate Google account just to see what permissions a theme entitles Google to?
Extensions don’t entitle Google to anything, so you’re safe if that’s your only concern. You’re even more safe with a Theme, because they don’t run any code. I just grabbed one from the chrome web store using the extension below, and added some code which, in an extension, would open a page when it gets installed. The only thing that happened was it changed the colour of my browser.
You don’t need a Google account to install extensions.
@Mythical5th excellent response here. To my knowledge Chrome themes don’t require permissions or use any telemetry.
@sourcecodec also worth mentioning that you can download themes from places other than the Chrome web store if you’re still concerned about that. For example, this site offers a wide variety of Chrome themes you can download directly – you’ll just have to install via the crx file, instructions for which are provided on the site as well: https://www.themebeta.com/
