Help me get my data back please?

Hello World,

I had some issue with my arch Linux distro where I couldn’t boot into it anymore, but I was at least able to make full backups of my partitions.

So I had to reinstall and decided to switch to Fedora while I was at it. Can someone please tell me from where and to where I need to copy which files and folders to at least get back my bookmarks, currently opened tabs, hidden groups and if possible my extensions and their settings too?!?!

Thank you.

LE: Nevermind, figured it out in the end, you have to copy the folder BraveSoftware from /home/username/.config and then it works, mostly, the extensions are kinda f-ed up. Gonna have to remove, redownload and reconfigure them.
And the tab groups are all inside one tiny annyoying little button and I have no idea how to get them out. No clue if this is because of what I did or another freaking “brilliant” change that has been made in the meantime… :frowning:

For anyone arriving at this post in the future, check out the following links:

About sync codes:

Official backup method (recommended) and additional backup option (advanced):

an overview (again, check the link above due news updates or changes in future versions):

Sync is not a backup.

Sync codes expire daily. This means writing down your phrase and trying to use it later to restore your data won’t work. Sync is designed to synchronize data between devices, not to back up your data. It was created to sync data between active devices, not as a long-term backup solution.

Sync codes expire daily to protect user data. In the past, people accidentally shared their QR codes or Sync phrases, which allowed unauthorized access to their data. to reduce these risks, Brave has made Sync codes expire regularly to reduce these risks.

Instead, use the export feature in the bookmarks and password manager.

Official Backup Method (Recommended)

  1. Export Passwords
Go to brave://password-manager/settings and click Export to download your passwords.
  2. Export Bookmarks
Go to brave://bookmarks/ and click Export Bookmarks from the menu in the top-right corner.
  3. Back Up Your Brave Wallet
If you use Brave Wallet and haven’t saved your recovery phrase, go to brave://wallet/crypto/backup-wallet to get your phrase.

Restoring Your Data

  1. Import Passwords
Go to brave://password-manager/settings and click Import to select your saved passwords file.
  2. Import Bookmarks
Go to brave://bookmarks/ and click Import Bookmarks from the top-right menu.
  3. Restore Your Wallet
Go to the Brave Wallet section, click Restore, and enter your recovery phrase and create a new password.

Optional and additional backup (Advanced)

To back up more than just passwords, bookmarks, and your wallet (like extensions and settings), you can back up the user profile on your Desktop. However, this method is not officially recommended because it can cause issues, especially if there are version differences (restoring the backup in a newer version of Brave than the one where the folder was copied and saved).

Ensure that you have created the recommended backups for passwords, bookmarks, and your wallet.

Locate the path of your profile in the operating system:

Go to brave://version and find the line where it shows the “profile path”. Probably the eighth option:

Back up the entire …/Brave-Browser folder

It’s best to compress it.

Restoring the profile

After installing Brave, find the profile folder and replace the new …/Brave-Browser folder with the one you backed up earlier.

If you’re restoring an older version backup, you might encounter issues with extensions, settings, and version compatibility.

If the new Brave installation is also part of a new operating system installation, make sure to check user permissions (chmod and chown).

The best option in this case is to install the same version as the backup.
