Let me know if this type of thread is not allowed but this is for a discussion regarding flagging of accounts.
So I recently put in a ticket because for months now I haven’t gotten a payout and it has shown that I’ve been earning. I’ve even made a purchase from one of the ads and still never got a payout. This was the response to my ticket regarding my account. Has anyone else gotten a notice that you have been flagged? How does one even know?
I appreciate that. I was mostly making the post to see how many other people have experienced this and if there are anyways to avoid it. I don’t want to be one of the “unusual” people described in the help doc.
For the time being though, I will refrain from clicking on any advertisements I see. I’ve been hammered with them the last month.
Great to know! I seen that in the help section but didn’t think that applied to me since the ads I clicked were either things I was curious about or accidently clicked closing the notification when in full screen games. Again, I appreciate the response. Helps me better understand how the ads work. If you guys make the same and I make the same, I’ll just go to ignoring them. Hopefully that limits any flagging in the future.
notified once, but not usually. everything looked normal from my side. earnings went up just fine, but never actually paid out. I would open a ticket and be told I was flagged and that it would be fixed next month. it took several months to actually get it fixed though.
I was flagged (obvious system glitch) last year. Opened ticket, was told system was correct and my account would not be re-instated. Escalated this ticket via our brave community board to I believe Evan or the other nice fellow/Brave staff member who investigated my ticket once again and found there to be no fault whatsoever and re-activated my account. The whole ordeal was upsetting at the time as I hadn’t done anything wrong and had I not known about this forum I would have been denied future rewards.
Yes. Quite a few of us have been flagged before. As far as notice, not sure which way you’re looking at. The browser doesn’t give you a notification you’ve been flagged anymore, though it used to.
I had been flagged at least once and had to go through ticket and all to get flag removed.
In the past:
You would stop seeing ads
No payments would arrive
When you try to reconnect to the custodial partner (done like every 90-120 days or so) it would advise that your account is flagged. But it would also tell you no action was needed and the system would automatically review later.
Recently (I was told this is temporary, but who knows?)
You see ads
It pretends like you’ll get payment
You don’t get payments
You’re still able to reconnect to custodial partner.
So basically, there’s absolutely no way for you to know you’re flagged except you don’t get payments. Someone did mention seeing something in brave://rewards-internals to mention flagged, but I’m not sure if it really does.
But in current way, you would create a support ticket just to be told you’re flagged. That’s when you find out.
Yes and no. Sorry to leave reply hanging, but got something I have to do. I’ll return and provide more info.
The long and short of it is that we should just be casually using the browser. If we just kind of go about things and forget Rewards exist, you’ll likely never have problems. The exception to this is in using VPN, which I’ll get into below.
Many of the people who are getting themselves in trouble tend to fall into one of two categories.
They are trying to maximize earnings. So whether it’s setting alarms, using macros/automation, or whatever, they are constantly scrolling through Brave News, opening new tabs, etc. The key thing here is that it’s excessive. I tend to phrase it to say that the browser isn’t here to mine or farm BAT. It’s not meant to replace a job or be a reliable source of income. When people put too much of a focus on earning, you are likely going to end up doing something you shouldn’t and will at least look suspicious to the system compared to the behavior of the average user.
Using VPN to constantly appear in other countries. While confusing, it’s important to note that just using a VPN in itself won’t get you flagged. The issue at hand is Rewards uses your IP address to know which ads to show you. If your IP address doesn’t match your Rewards country, you can have problems. This is especially true when/if it happens on a regular basis as the system will assume you’re trying to bypass regional restrictions.
(A) NOTE: If you do use a VPN, you’ll want to make sure it’s in your country/region. If you need to use VPN to other countries on a regular basis, you’ll probably want to disable Rewards before you do.
There are a lot more factors than these at play, but Brave’s policy is not to reveal them to anyone. Even the two things I listed above are things Brave won’t reveal to anyone and are essentially just things users have discovered over the years through communicating to each other.
There are two issues why they decide not to tell people anything:
People abusing also like to argue. So if they did say “you used automation to views ads.” The users just argue, “No I didn’t! Prove it. Show me the video or logs that can prove it was automation.” It gets annoying to deal with, especially since Brave doesn’t have to “prove” anything. Even more so when you realize Brave and other companies can’t look to see what’s on your computer or anything, so they are highly restricted on what they are able to view for antifraud measures. If they did go to show their hand, all they’d be doing is taking away the last little bit they have available to them to catch people committing fraud.
I kind of said this in the above, but people abusing the system use it to try to finesse things and learn how they get caught. The more that gets said, the better chance they learn how to game the system.
Clicking ads don’t get you in trouble or anything. Just have to keep in mind that clicking doesn’t get you any extra BAT or advantages. The only reason you should ever click on ads is if you are sincerely interested in them and want to learn more on the company/product being advertised.
I have same issue, solved yesterday.
The last paid was on Nov 2023, after that I haven’t receive any BAT.
I’am shocking when knowing I may been flagged without any inform.
Howeve, during this time, the ads still pop-up, predict balance also, but no payout.
Thinking this is not fair to the users and it’s totally scam when doing this way.
After all, without warning and flagged users as abnormal account is just in the best interest/profit of the company but ignored users rights.
For example, Google Adsense stop advertising after abuse detected, it can ensure advertisers or users rights.
The biggest difference with Brave is that Advertisers pay them to show ads on the platform and then Brave buys BAT on the open market to send us for viewing those ads. If its a flat rate for the ads regardless of our interactions, then they didn’t actually gain any money, they just didn’t lose the any money. So in a way, they aren’t profiting anymore or less than they already would, instead they are just retaining the funds advertisers gave to them.
I do know how you feel though. I had about 20BAT I should have gotten since I’ve installed the browser but instead, none of it will be paid out since my account was flagged. I understand why they do it, I just wished it wasn’t a complete surprise after 2 months of being served advertisements for which they were already paid for.
I opened a ticket and they just said no around a year ago. I offered to stop using my VPN with Brave because I thought that might be why, but got no response to that. Haven’t used Brave much since then.
