Currently, Brave allows for 12 favorite (top) site tiles per page, which requires users to navigate between pages using small navigation bubbles at the bottom. While this works well with a trackpad where you can swipe intuitively, it presents challenges for mouse users. Clicking these bubbles requires a bit of patience when on larger desktops.
I propose two enhancements to address this:
Increase the number of tiles per page: Provide an option to allow users to select the number of tiles displayed per page (e.g., 12, 16, 20+).
OR
Add scrolling functionality: Implement horizontal scrolling (via mouse wheel or drag gestures) as an alternative to clicking the small navigation bubbles.
Why This Would Help:
Enhanced Accessibility: Mouse users, especially those with limited dexterity, would find it easier to navigate their favorite sites without relying on precise clicks.
Improved Customization: Giving users the ability to control the number of tiles per page ensures that they can tailor their experience to suit their browsing habits and screen size.
I’m not sure if this is only an issue because of being a macOS user and that I’m using a mouse and not a trackpad, which is worth mentioning.
Thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully consider the request! What you guys have come to build is a one of a kind browsing experience and I’m happy to keep ya’ll in my front pocket. Blessings, take care Brave team!
They said they didn’t want to. Not sure if it will ever change, but they have it designed as they do because they want to make sure space isn’t blocked for New Tab Page ads (also known as Sponsored Images). Even if we have it disabled, they don’t want to provide secondary options that may incentivize people to disable the NTP ads.
Hopefully this may change in the future as it’s definitely something that has been requested frequently.
This exists, at least on Windows. It should be the same on Max. When in the area, without clicking a favorite, click your middle mouse button and drag left or right. It will go that direction. Can see me doing it in the video below:
This is something which an extension can help with - there are several which replace the New Tab page with something containing a “speed dial” that can have as many links as you want. I’m the developer of the extension below, which provides the same functionality in a popup:
Any recent news about this topic yet ? Are they finally going to increase the number of tiles ? There is soooo much unused open space. What I saw in other comments they said it had to do with reserving the space for ads, but come on, even if you would make it 3 lines with each 10 tiles wide (instead of the 2 lines with 6 tiles wide) there would still be more than enough space to reserve for brave ads imo.
I am really on the fence now. I use Brave for quit a while and I followed the discussions a bit about this topic going even back to around 2020-2021, but unfortunately I see nothing has changed… I am really thinking of switching browsers… imho a shame to be quit honest because for all the rest I really like Brave. I hope someone knows something. Thanks anyway. Cheers.
Thanks for showing, I never knew that was possible. I tried it out, it works but to be quit honest I don’t find it working pretty well. Too often, instead of going to left or right, you change the position of one of your tiles because the area in which you can use this scrolling is too small imho. Thanks anyway, have a great day.
@juice@romeosierra@Mythical5th just an FYI, it seems Brave is rolling out an update. I just was messing around with brave://flags when I saw New Tab Page refresh and realized it said it was a new design.
I don’t know what I think of it. They moved the location of favorites to top center and now we see even less favorites when there, but if we press the button to see others, it shifts to a full page thing:
Was messing around with it and found that removing favorites is a bit glitched on it for me. The edit button was missing until I right clicked on something, but then the context menu blocked it. I had to hit ESC on my keyboard to close the context menu to then be able to Delete or Edit each entry. Hopefully something they get fixed before it reaches Release.
Thanks for giving this update. As you said yourself, I don’t know what I think of it neither. I guess it’s an improvement, it doesn’t look bad imo, but then again it’s that extra click you need to see all of your favorites. I just don’t understand why it has to be this complicated (seeing how long this feature has been requested) but let’s wait and see. I am very curious. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
