ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED when trying to open duckduckgo.com

Description of the issue:

When trying to open duckduckgo.com from Brave, I get a ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED message and am unable to open the page. This does not seem to be a DNS configuration issue, as the page opens fine in Firefox.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open Brave
  2. Enter duckduckgo.com in the search bar
  3. Press enter

This also happens when trying to access duckduckgo directly via their IP address (40.114.177.156)

Brave Version: Version 1.18.78 Chromium: 87.0.4280.141 (Official Build) unknown (64-bit)
I’ve also tried brave-beta (v1.19.77), but with the same result, as described above.

Additional Information:
OS: Manjaro Linux
Kernel: 5.10.2-2
Desktkop: KDE Plasma
Brave was installed form the official Manjaro repositories using pacman.

When running brave from the command line with

brave --enable-logging --v=1

and performing the steps I listed under How can this issue be reproduced?, I receive the following output:

(brave:17394): Gtk-WARNING **: 21:44:07.460: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:2:33: Failed to import: Error opening file /home/sandro/.config/gtk-3.0/window_decorations.css: No such file or di [17422:17422:0114/214407.583941:ERROR:vaapi_wrapper.cc(541)] vaInitialize failed: unknown libva error [17394:17394:0114/214407.758430:ERROR:profile_attributes_storage.cc(526)] Failed to PNG encode the image. Note that this line

Fontconfig error: Cannot load default config file: No such file: (null) [17394:17429:0114/214428.179340:ERROR:media_history_store.cc(372)] Failed to begin the transaction.
Is displayed when trying to access duckduckgo.com (although I don`t think that it’s the root of the issue).

I am happy to help troubleshooting this issue, just let me know how :slight_smile:

@Sandroid,
Thank you for the detailed report.
Can I ask if you can visit DDG in a new profile or when using a Private window? Additionally, do you have any extensions installed at this time?

Hey, thanks for the quick reply.
I can not visit DDG from a new profile or a regular private window. However, I just noticed that I can visit DDG from a Private window with Tor (note that I’m visiting their regular website, not their hidden service).

Edit: I also do not have any extensions installed.

@Sandroid,
Are you using a VPN by chance? Do you have any anti-virus software running on your machine at this time?

No, none of the above.
I’ve also tested the newly released beta version 1.20.78, but the still persists.

Something is blocking it on the local machine, I’m just not sure (not related to the traceroute). Do other sites do the same thing, does another PC show the same issue?

I have not encountered this with any other sites so far. It also works fine using Firefox on the same PC. Thats why I thought it had something to do with Brave in the first place. From my Windows machine I can access DDG using Brave (beeing connected to the same network).

It’s hit and miss for me now and also affects other websites. When I can successfully visit DDG, a restart of brave breaks it again. Event though the DNS provider does not change. Any ideas how I can troubleshoot this further?

Seems like I was able to resolve the issue. The origin was indeed one of the DNS resolvers in my router and had nothing to do with Brave. I still don’t know why other devices in the same network were not affected, but removing a specific resolver and restarting the router fixed the issue.

Anyway, thanks for the help and the friendly support!
