Description of the issue: Win10 - Brave browser won’t launch, unable to run the installer even. Instant crashes How can this issue be reproduced?
Unclear - browser crashed while I was playing a RAM heavy game, couldn’t stay open ever since
Expected result:
Able to run Brave & installer for it
Brave Version( check About Brave):
Trying to install latest version
Additional Information:
The browser was crashing in first 3-4 s after launch
The installer now does the same.
While installer is running, one of 3 “Brave update” processes becomes suspended and maybe 1s later everything crashes.
I attempted to find any crash logs but there were none in appdata\local\bravesoftware
There was also nothing in program files (x86)\bravesoftware
First I tried the obvious ones, running in private mode, Restarting machine
Forcing update/reinstall by running the launcher
Finally tried running with :
brave.exe --profile-directory=“Test Profile”
or
brave.exe --user-data-dir=“C:\Temp\BraveTemp”
or
brave.exe --disable-gpu
None of them behaved differently.
The most frustrating part is that I cannot find any logs whatsoever, best I can do is try to catch
After that, I sad goodbye to my data, removed everything from program files & appdata - tried reinstalling, and now I realize that even the installer crashes instantly.
@Igla thank you for reporting and apologize for the inconvenience here. Crashing is one thing but the fact that the installer won’t run at all is the strangest part imo.
Can you try opening the Windows task manager and ensuring that there are no Brave processes running? If there are, kill them all in the manager, then try running the installer again?
I have attempted that, no luck - there are no “brave.exe” processes, which makes sense given that I nuked it :).
I realize now that another program wont run, “ScreenPal” which I used last night right before all of this started happening.
Clearly I’m having issues “outside brave” - but if you can help me understand what it’s using/doing with installer maybe I can figure out what I actually need to fix
This is really devastating for me, I don’t want to deal with other browsers. I may end up reinstalling OS even, but I hope it won’t come to that.
Have you tried uninstalling this app and testing to see if – for some reason – it is conflicting with Brave/the installer?
Additionally, can you try running the standalone installer from our Github and see if you get the same results? You’ll find it here:
Scroll to the bottom and find the installer appropriate for your OS. If you have a 32bit system, use BraveBrowserStandAloneSetUp32.exe. I believe the base BraveBrowserStandAloneSetup.exe file will work for 64 bit systems.
I cannot run standalone installer either - as soon as GUI shows up (or should show up) it crashes same like normal installer.
Whatever the “updater” is using to run itself is the problem, I just don’t understand what it is.
In my mind this is some equivalent of struggling to play video files with programs that use ffmpeg, because my ffmpeg is corrupted.
The question is what is the equivalent of ffmpeg for brave & chrome installer, screenpal app, and who knows how many other things I have broken but didn’t realize it yet :(.
*Just confirmed that chrome installer crashes the same.
